If I understand what you want to do then this might be what you're looking for.
Create your 2 objects, select both of them and then group them (ctrl + g) and then apply the gradient. They now share a single gradient.

Re: pixel problem?
Increase the dpi on the export dialogue. You'll always have a certain amount of that with pngs but increasing the dpi should help.

Re: inkscape won't export my entire image
There are a few options for exporting. It sounds like it's exporting the page rather than the entire drawing. Either expand the canvas to fit your image or select the "Drawing" tab from the export dialogue.

Re: Coffee Break Icon
Really like the effect you've got on the steam there!
My suggestion would be to rotate the bowl of the cup anti-clockwise by a degree or two so the two edges of the ellipse of the rim are aligned. Might be my wonky vision but it looks like the cup is tilted to the right slightly

Thanks, I had noticed that myself but forgot about it. It's surprisingly difficult to get a circle of star shapes to look more random! I found adding in a few smaller stars has helped break up the symmetry.

Thanks for your feedback. Here's a version taking your suggestions into account. I'm still undecided about the stalk. http://dorkmatter.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/dandeshaded.png And here's another with more simple shading using a gradient. http://dorkmatter.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/dandeg...

Dandelion
Hi,
I'm working on this dandelion illustration and I think it's nearly finished. Maybe the stalk part needs some work but I'm not sure what.
Thoughts and opinions welcome

Re: old hippie flashback
Personally I much prefer the second but I liked the shape in the middle - it's just the lines radiating. I think the softer lines allow the detail of the spirographs to show. In the first one I think the image is quite busy and I wasn't really sure where my eye should be drawn. Maybe you could have ...

Re: Change window background, not document background
What I do in that situation is set the background to whichever colour is easiest to work to and just before exporting the image I go to properties and set the background colour to have an opacity of zero. You could also try selecting the objects that make up your image and export them rather than th...

Re: Get gaps when you use patterns? Here's a work-around.
Someone was very helpful and left a comment on my blog about this when I ran into the same problem. To quote him: You can work around the problem by editing the SVG markup for your pattern using the editor under EDIT > XML editor. It may be intimidating at first but what you’re looking for is a bran...

Re: Should InkscapeForum.com allow image uploads?
I voted yes. I think it would be a great benefit to the InkscapeForum.com to have this feature. I have a site with a few thousand user uploaded images and I find that a short notice about copyright (with a link to more information) where uploading occurs is enough to get the message across. You coul...

Re: Creating something that can be used in Corel Draw
Good point. It looks fine in FF3. I guess I can send along a png of how it should look along with the inkscape svg in case anything goes crazy in Corel Draw. I hope they give a good price after all this

Creating something that can be used in Corel Draw
I've made a design in inkscape that I am sending to laser cutting places for prices. So far I've been sending .eps but one place I've contacted only takes Corel Draw and say they can't open my eps file. They want .dwg but I was hoping I could send an svg instead. I saved it as a plain SVG and 2/3 of...

Re: Gradient to Path
It looks to me as though the author has used transparency in the images where a horizontal marker has been used, like in the last image in the tutorial. I don't think you'll be able to have transparency without the overlaps being visible. How would it look if your marker was wedge shaped? All I can ...

Re: Preparing hard-to-trace photos...
You could use GIMP to reduce the number of colours. Go to Image>Mode>Indexed and then set the Maximum Number of Colours to something low, like 20 and you'll have a nice easy image to trace.

What version of OS X are you running?
I'm on 10.4 (Tiger). I think the default OS X download is Leopard which once caused me problems.

Re: help with shapes please
If you delete the path (the circle in this case) there's nothing for the text to shape to so it will go back to being flat as normal.
What you need to do is select the circle only and in the Stroke Dialogue make the opacity 0%. This will give you visible text on an invisible circular path.

Re: help with shapes please
You could just set the line style to be dotted instead of solid... unless you really need it to be full-stops, in which case I'd set the stroke opacity of the circle to be 0.

Re: Burned Paper
I agree, the fractalise idea is great. Something I thought might help for colouring the edges is the gradient to path tutorial: http://needcoffee.deviantart.com/art/Gr ... h-78650259
You could modify that to make it paper colour at the inside fading to brown around the edges.

Re: Combine paths, maintain stroke width
I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something but that makes sense. I've been able to combine the paths on the veins and another path for the outline so at least there's just two sets of path bending. It does look more natural that way and I've been able to vary the leaves in more ways than ...

[(cannot be) solved] Combine paths, maintain stroke width
Is it possible to combine two paths of differing stroke widths without them being equalised? I have a leaf shape. I want the outline to be 3px and the vein detail to be 1px. I'd like to combine the paths so it's easier to apply the Bend Path Effect, without having to bend each part separately. Thank...

I really like the use of texture on the brown one. It adds depth but you've kept an illustrative style. So my vote is for the fudgy one but I think they're all good.
