band logos

Postby llogg » Mon Mar 16, 2009 1:14 pm

My younger brother is in a band named after the street we grew up on. Here are a couple logo ideas I knocked off for his band. I tried to keep it simple and graphic, thinking about keeping T-shirt and sticker costs to a minimum with a stark black and white design. The most complex one on the far right would require some halftoning. What do you guys think?

I've done other mockups for him in the past. I think I'm heading more in the right direction with this last bunch.

I like the one with the bird best (although i think i have seen this before, so there might be some originality issues...) - the ones with the pda-navigator-style have merit, but i think you would have to keep with the prototypical look of navigator maps to be intuitively understandable. - perhaps the name hugging the road (and the road without lane-dividers, which i never saw on a pda-map before) - you could add (without cluttering) some map smbols to set the style of the band (graveyard, church, hospital, scenical view?) - if the map-style is intuitive you can also skip the actual pda/navigator, which takes up a lot of area whithout carrying much content (and is misguiding in the case of the iphone).

The problem with the bird one is it's not very versatile. I don't doubt that there are images of birds sitting on street signs littered across the known universe, but I didn't crib this image from any particular source. Just added the bird to make the picture of the street sign more interesting.
I wasn't really going for a navigator map look (although the two non-iphone ones may give that impression). I think this further tinkering may be more clear as to what I was going for.http://files.myopera.com/llogg/files/iphonelogo.png

What kind of music they play? I see too much variations and styles in the logos (some are noised, other are very simple), the main idea is the road or the sign? or both? Try to find just one symbol for the band (based in the musical style and in the character of they lyrics) , and then express it with colors and line styles that reforces the main idea.... oh, and dont forget the typography!

I like the "shield orange", but in still needs some theorical background, the band sounds "orange"?

Sorry for my english!

The orange is the same orange used by the University of Texas. Also that logo is based on the Lone Star Beer logo, combining three things that play a lg part in the band's songs -- beer, Texas, and college life. These are all just sketches, as they have no idea what they're after in terms of a design for shirts/stickers. It's much more difficult to design something when given no specs than when given an idea of what the person's after. Thus the all-over-the-place spectrum of these designs.

For some reason that made me think of this picture. Perhaps it could serve for some inspiration?

I did not mean to offend. I just saw the picture and had a strong dejá-vu, and for some reason the association 'stephen king'. - beer and college life are not the first associations, though :-)
I did not recognize the beer logo, but if that is widely known in your town, it would be a nice touch.
