ideas for Inkscape community

Postby brynn » Tue Aug 07, 2012 2:05 pm

Hi Friends,
I posted the following message in the private Moderators forum, just to get micro's permission before posting publicly. The title was "thoughts on improving the forum". Not that I think anything is wrong with the forum, I've just been thinking of things that could make it better.

As it turns out (and as I expected) he's not interested in changing or adding anything. But I still think my ideas have some merit, and I'm still thinking of setting up a separate site, which I hope could be linked to this forum. I wouldn't try to create a new forum, because I don't think I could do any better than this forum. But I hope he will agree to link to it.

So since it's no longer a suggestion for the forum, I'm posting in OT instead of Feedback subforum.

Hi microUgly and Friends,
For some time now, I've been thinking about ways in which the forum might be improved. It's not that I think anything is wrong. It's just that there could be so much more. I'm thinking about a portal, I guess. And I don't know if phpBB offers a portal, but that's a general way to describe what I'm thinking about.

For example, we could have a page for tutorials. While there are multitudes of tutorials available, there are only a handful of sites which provide a large collection of tutorials for Inkscape, in one place. So this would be no different from the other few that are out there. But it would be another large collection for the convenience of the community -- perhaps a place to centralize videos tutorials, which currently can only be found by searching the internet, YT, etc.

There could be a page for articles. I suspect we have several members who might like to write some articles (or maybe already have) who don't have any place to post/host them.

Most awesome of all would be a gallery or galleries! While the 3 subforums for submitting images is nice and adequate, I think a real gallery would be even nicer -- in a gallery style, rather than topic style. Maybe it would include artist profiles. And it doesn't need to be anything that would compete with dA or Flickr, but just a place for forum members to display their work.

Perhaps there could be a chatroom, where members could have impromptu private chats. Or maybe we could have something like a live tutorial chat, or other scheduled chats, like lessons on certain Inkscape techniques. Inkscape University, you know -- why not?!!

And maybe other members would have other ideas too. I'm posting this privately here, for now. But if you have no objections, I'd like to post in Feedback/Suggestions, to get other members' input. And we could only get some idea if there is any interest in this, by posting in the public area.

And I'm certainly more than willing to put in time and energy, to either help set up, organize, moderate and/or administer this project. If it's successful, we would need to bring at least one new moderator on board, because there will be more content to moderate, and I couldn't do it all alone.

Comments?

I think these things could benefit the Inkscape community, and wonder if anyone else has been thinking likewise. If anyone has any other ideas, or support or criticism for these ideas, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks :D

Go for it, Brynn! I don't think there could be too many Inkscape sites! Look at how many GIMP sites there are, from forum to personal and inbetween. You will need to pay for hosting and domain name but I hope that you will get some nice revenue generating ads to pay for that... Good luck!
P.s. I hope this doesn't mean that we'll be losing your help and moderation from this forum, though.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Oh no, I'm not going anywhere. As I said, my original thought was to add more content on this site. But that's not going to be possible.

I haven't even reached the point of deciding how or where to do this, and if I do decide to do it, I'll have to learn some new skills. I understand the basics about creating and running a website. But there are many details I would still need to learn. Maybe someone else might be interested in joining the project, and maybe they would have some skills. But at this point, I'm just "testing the water" trying to learn if there might be any demand for more resources, what kind of resources, and if anyone else is interested in participating. (hmm, maybe I should set up a poll?)

But if I do decide to go ahead with this, I doubt that I will use ads to generate income, even to offset hosting fees. I find ads deplorable (when they are foisted upon visitors to a website, which is designed to help them) (help them with something unrelated to the ads) and that's one reason why I voluteered to moderate, to keep spam (ads) out of the forum. I realize that it's a perfectly legitimate industry, but I would prefer not to have it on any websites I might create. Well, unless they were ads for Inkscape, lol. I wouldn't mind that. But then being the open source project, I doubt anyone would pay to advertise it. Of course I could be wrong. Maybe this something I need to learn more about?

Anyway, thanks for your support :D

If you like, I can offer you hosting so you can dabble. I wouldn't want to host it indefinitely. Not because it's burden, but if I don't pay my bills it'll disappear. Plus, I'm not reliable :)

I'm also happy to offer assistance in terms of answering any technical questions. Whilst I don't try too hard with this forum, I am actually a web application developer--there's not much I don't know about web hosting, databases, code, etc.

Oh, that's very kind :D
I'll keep it in mind if I ever make it to the dabbling stage, lol.
