Has anyone thought about including the ability to create fonts, or being able to export to TTF format? I would be a great asset to Inkscape.

I recommend you look into FontForge. I'm a firm believer that software that deviates from it's primary purpose tends to weaken the product rather than strengthen it.

There is, apparently, some way to create fonts with Inkscape. I have not looked into it yet, but saw this message recently about making dingbat fonts with Inkscape. It sounds like Inkscape includes a font editor, or that there's a plugin or something? You can read for yourself:

In Inkscape:
File > New > Fontforge_glypth

As far as I can tell, it's just another unique file size. I opened one just now, and find it's 1000 x 1000 px. It does have a horizontal guideline at 200.00. But beyond that, it doesn't appear to have any features unique to creating fonts -- just a page size.

But I did just notice the SVG Font Editor, in the Text menu. It's not readily apparent how to use it, and I have not looked for further info, in the various Guides and Manuals. But it could be fairly functional, for all I know.
