Inkscape web page in japanese using Chrome

Postby jorgen.bodde » Mon Aug 02, 2010 4:58 pm

Hi,

I was just looking for a new version. I am from the Netherlands but when I go to Inkscape.org I get a japanese page! And oddly enough there is no little flag icon that can kindly redirect me to the english version?? I would even do with Dutch is that was an option

When I click on the download link, I get a page in german. Once again, close but no sigar :-)

Someone needs to look at the detection mechanism of how the main web site detects languages. There are two news articles in english up there, but all menu items and other text is japanese.

This is interesting. It only happens in Chrome, firefox seems to be ok...

Hhhmm, yes, I've just visited Inkscape.org, and didn't even have to browse to the download page to see a problem. Parts of the homepage are in Russian! (I'm using IE.)

I don't know if it's been hacked, or if there is some weird problem with a server? Also I'm not sure to whom to report this, but I will try to find out.

Are you going to be able to download ok with Firefox?

This issue has come up several times in recent weeks (or even months now?) in #inkscape (irc) - it seems to happen randomly, for one of the two URLs of Inkscape's website. Usually only one address is affected, but it's not always the same one. If you don't get the English version right away - try the other one:

http://inkscape.org
http://www.inkscape.org

Reason is unknown so far, but it looks like a server hickup or misconfiguration (ignoring 'Accepted Languages' settings as sent by the browser and apparently without correlation to the IP address/location of the visitor).

I didn't need to download, I was more looking for version information. Like I said in Firefox it was all ok, maybe a browser identification problem?

It was more annoying that I could not switch to English. I don't mind being presented with a foreign language as long as there is a little english flag I can click :-)

If the server decides to sent the page in a 'random' language, I see it with all the installed browsers (Firefox, Safari, Opera). Others on irc also reported it for different browsers, across various platforms.

At the moment all three browsers load the Russian version at inkscape.org, and the English version at www.inkscape.org, an hour ago it was German instead of Russian - seems random and not browser related.

Well it is a nice gesture of the server to lean us some foreign languages ;-)

I am also a developer, so I always think in solutions and reasons why this happens. I think a good guess might be that the server session information gets screwed up, and new visitors get old session information hence a wrong language, perhaps? That would explain the randomness in language .. but then again it might be something else.

Anyway, I hope it gets solved soon...

Greetz,

Could this explain why - in Firefox - I get the English version if reloading the page overriding the cache (Shift+Cmd+R on the Mac, Shift+Ctrl+R or Ctrl+F5 on other platforms), whereas normal loading gets the 'random' version? (this is true even if there the page isn't in the local cache at all - i.e. after clearing the cache, quit & restart the browser)

I don't know about the mixed languages but the www vs no-www should be resolved by redirecting one to the other always (having both can hurt search engine ranking too). It's commented out in .htaccess in Drupal, maybe someone with website access can set it up properly, and maybe then the multilanguage bug would behave.

Maybe there were some upgrades done to the multilang modules some months ago that caused the problem?
