Piddley Little Ruler Question

Postby Sharon175 » Wed Apr 30, 2014 10:20 pm

In the grand scheme of using this wonderful program, this is a very small problem. But I am used to working from the upper left corner of the screen and would like that to be my 0:0 point of the rulers. I have looked all over the Preferences and Forum Info and cannot find a way to change the side ruler (Y) so the 0 is at the top. I feel like I am always counting backwards when trying to size objects {{sigh}} and apparently easily confused by this.... Is there a way to change the ruler? Thanks!

Not much to be done, I think.

If you can handle the negative, you might try setting up guides around a faux page below the abscissa...

That might mean output would need to be re-oriented to positive. (I'd keep a working copy make a temporary output file in the positive.)
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

I am obviously more "technically challenged" than I thought. I have tried to to re-set everything I know, and cannot get "into the negative". I have a default page size of 8.5 x 11. I had X and Y both set to 0 in Document Preferences. I reset Y to -11, and nothing changes on the display. Hmmmmm... I must be doing something wrong....

Remember, this is not a real solution but a cheap workaround.

It simply places the work such that 0,0 is upper left. Inkscape doesn't care where you work, but the area to output must be specified.
All the Y-values will be negative.

Ahhhhhh... don't know why I didn't get this.... I work outside the page all the time. In fact, sometimes there's more outside than inside. Thanks for the revised perspective - it will most definitely help my set-up!

Hi.

Same thing happened to me as well when I started with Inkscape.

Now I have made a habit to zoom in on the page by pressing the number 5 key before starting any drawing activity.
From the help file;

    The 'Zoom' keys;
    1 - zoom 1:1
    2 - zoom 1:2
    3 - zoom to selection
    4 - zoom to drawing
    5 - zoom to page
    Ctrl +E, 6 zoom to page width
    Zoom history
    ` (back quote) previous zoom
    Shift +` next zoom
    With these keys, you can travel back and forth through the history of zooms in this session.

I recommend to have a look at the Help - Keys and Mouse reference every now and then and actually
try out the shortcuts you are not familiar with.
Your 'operation' of inkscape will be much more efficient by the use of keyboard shortcuts.
