Stacking LPE's for a gradient halftone effect on arched text

Postby Espermaschine » Tue Nov 24, 2015 7:23 am

I watched this tutorial on how to make a halftone effect inside a text.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdAnUJ-plEA

I converted my text into a path, created the halftone (triangles) with the 'Interpolate Subpaths' LPE.
Grouped the Halftone pattern and clipped it with a copy of my text.
Then i entered the group and tweaked the halftone-effect to my liking.

Next i want to bend the text so that it arches.
I group my text with the clipped halftone and apply the 'Bend' LPE.

Text bends, but halftone pattern vanishes. :(
Halp ?

Right, so i can apply 'Bend' when i convert the 'Interpolate Subpaths' LPE into a path, then group pattern and text and then apply 'Bend' on the group.

BUT, when i now clip the pattern and move the group, everything falls apart.....

There are some inconvenient behavior when applying the lpe to the group, though lpe-s are meant for paths at the first place.

Here goes nothing:

  1. draw the clipping path
  2. apply bend lpe to it
  3. draw halftone pattern with any lpe-s
  4. copy clipping path
  5. clone clipping path
  6. apply (bent) clipping path's clone over the (unbent) halftone pattern -set clipping-
  7. select halftone pattern and paste path effect

Now you can edit the original parent object's lpe's bending, the halftone pattern will follow.
One thing to be careful is additional transformations, which may shift off the pattern from the clipped area.

Okay that works for me. Thank you !

What can be done about the rendering ?
There is a visible black outline, where the pattern has been clipped.

Or what if i want to clip the pattern with an inset version of the original text ?

Probably anti-aliasing issue of double path segments.

If you clip the pattern and the background at once it should perform better (current chrome still renders it with the issue).
Anti-aliasing can now be switched off, again, that should solve the problem, theoretically speaking.

In this one the parent is set 100% transparent, but for more fancyness you can add a white fill and black stroke and use it for masking, for an "inset" effect.

(Note how both the pattern and the text have the same bounding box now.)

Masking a clipped object, my goodness, how can i come up with stuff like this, without my brain melting ? :D

This is a lot of brainwork for such a simple looking effect.
Hope this will be easier in future version of IS.

EDIT: cool, i was even capable of clipping the grouped pattern for more control. Lazur, you rock (as usual) !

Something alike?

Now masking is involved. Only problem with it is that you need to keep the parent at 100% opacity. Maybe it can be hidden in a layer...

Thinking about the effect, its probably an even better strategy to do it with the Pap LPE.

Put the text-path as a pattern on an arc and do the same with the halftone-pattern (well, triangle).
That way you dont have to stack LPE's.

Stupid Illustrator

Once you get it, this technique is a lot of fun !

For pattern look here:
