Hello and welcome to the board! Nice to see somebody doing something comic-like. Not too many people here doing this kind of stuff. What I like about your image is the general style and the expression on the middle guy's face. What I don't like so much is the colors... to be honest, they kinda hurt my eyes :D Not sure if they are correct (i.e. as in the show you ref'ed) or not since I don't know the show. Anyway, good job. Hope you'll keep hanging around and posting stuff.

Thank you! The referenced show uses this colour scheme. It can be jarring and an acquired taste, but it's one of the things that makes it stand out. They were actually going to go for a more subtle palette, but changed their minds. The softer, analogue quality of the original show is probably easier on the eyes. Mission Hill is also one of the last hand painted cartoons ever made. It released in 1999.

Ah, I see. Yeah, the colors definitely stand out. Thanks for the info. Just out of curiosity, when you don't do things referenced from this show (or any other), what does that look like, i.e. your personal style?

I try not to have a personal style. It's hard to figure out what I want to do, but I can't do everything. Best I can do is practice the fundamentals. I'll be posting more stuff for sure.

I find that a bit odd... I mean the "trying not to have a personal style" part. Developing a distinct style doesn't mean you can't stray from it and try out other things and styles. And it's not necessarily a rigid thing or set in stone or something. It evolves over time, things change, develop and "live". But I'm not trying to talk you into something here. It's your decision and you'll have to find whatever way works best for you - which I'm sure you'll manage to do.

Thanks for the links. I'll take a look later.

Hah! And all this time I've been trying to figure out what my personal style is! Actually I think I've started to recognize certain "trends" in my work. But I didn't know it was possible not to have one.

I think everyone must have a personal style, whether they like it or not :D Maybe you just don't choose to recognize or develop it? Although without having a personal style, I don't know how one could be motivated to, or why one would want to produce "art" at all. Isn't the creative urge an expression of one's artistic style, from the git-go??! Like D says, having a personal style doesn't mean you have to stop learning, or that you can't branch out and try new things. I guess it must be as impossible for one's style not to grow and develop, as it is not to have one at all.

I suppose that must be my opinion, but it seems like a "fact of life" to me.

Yeah, I don't know. Not saying I don't have one, just that it's not my aim. Lot's of professionals spend their careers conforming to different styles for the sake of consistency within the projects their hired onto. My ideal would be to mainly have a grasp on fundamentals like colour and composition to communicate my ideas. This goes for graphic design as well as illustration. I like to learn different techniques from other people's work, but the fundamentals help me create different techniques for each task.

Though many artists and designers get work by doing many different things in a similar personal style.

A short article worth some thought. -> http://chrisoatley.com/techniquetrap/

Well, I guess if one's goal is to create art for someone else, that's a good plan. But I just use Inkscape as hobby. I only want to create art for myself.

It's hard to imagine being hired to create art for someone else, and not still having a personal style, that gives me pleasure. If I'm all day drawing art in a certain style for someone else, the first thing I want to do when I get home, is draw art in my own style, for myself.

Inkscape Timelapse [Jumper Splashscreen]

Postby CameronBohnstedt » Tue Aug 25, 2015 5:27 am

Image
Digital illustration done in Inkscape from a sketch. Many assets are from a mobile video game I've been working on since before I decided to do this video. I've cut out some dead ends and wasted time. I'm working on this casual mobile game with Unity 3D game engine wizard, Ivo van der Marel. (links yet to be given)

My goal was to showcase the capabilities of an open source software stack geared toward illustration (and soon game art development). Comments and questions are welcome. : )

Thank you! The poster is actually completely digital and built up on many layers. The brush I used was rough and I did a lot of scribbling.

INKSCAPE TIMELAPSE TRACE [MISSION HILL]

Postby CameronBohnstedt » Sun Sep 06, 2015 2:37 pm

Thought I would show how I trace screen shots of some of my favourite animated shows in order to have an infinite resolution wallpaper or print. It's all pretty straightforward.

Mission Hill is probably in my top 5 of animated series with it's writing and unique style. It would be a dream to have it resurrected by Netflix, though maybe some things are better left untouched. Would have been nice to see the remaining screenplays brought to life. They're great on their own. Here's a link to the scripts.

Timelapse of arcade/video game store logo creation using Inskcape. Went ahead and left a lot of the backtracking and brainstorming. Not sure how well it reads both Pong and electrical outlet.

Neat stuff. My favorites are the Legend and Jumper pieces. Love the warm colors and the reduced style (but I think I already mentioned this before). Just out of curiosity.. In the Jumper video you're drawing the animals and stuff on top of the sketch - while everything seems to be done already (on the right side). Why is that?

Thank you! That's actually something I'd never tried before, but I used game assets I had already created. Those are in-game shapes. Thanks for asking. : )
