I have always used web safe fonts for my website and free ones for image based design (ie. using inkscape to make images for the web).

Recently I have thought about the possibility buying a font that I could use in Inkscape and for embedding in my website, but when I found out about all the DRM and pageview tracking just to buy a font to use on your website it really turned me off of the idea.

Does anyone know if there is a place to buy a font or two that I can use for design or web embedding without any of these hassles?
Or the best source for free fonts that are licensed for commercial web embedding use or open source fonts (I am especially looking for an extra bold modern font for graphical titles).

I design the entire website in notepad++, inkscape, gimp and other open source software, so I really don't like the idea of adding third party DRM nonsense (or having to add up page views and report to some font company) that would almost mean that someone else would partially own my website that I have designed (including the artwork) completely myself.

What is this DRM that you're talking about?

Well from what I saw, you can't just buy a font to embed in your website and use, the font store wants to track your page views with their DRM page view tracking code in your css and/or demand more money later if more people view your website.

It's just that I didn't design the website completely myself in every aspect just to add third party drm into it.

Also I read there is something of a monopoly of one corporation owning just about every font store.

I just wondered if anyone knew of an independent font foundry that sells their own fonts themselves without drm.

But I am now seriously considering learning to make my own font (just a few characters for logos, titles etc.).

I guess I've never purchased a font. I always assumed if you purchased it you purchased a license, and you can use it however that license says you can.

But it's crazy to sell fonts like that! It actually sounds.....well, illegal. What's that word I'm thinking of....bunko?

Aren't there plenty of fonts that you can use on a website, without having to waste your money on that racket?

It's one thing to control your copyright. But if you buy a product, there should be no further fees. You can't sell a product and then demand more money, depending on how much your customer uses it!

Well, now that I know what it is, I agree with you. There must be some group, somewhere that provides fonts without these restrictions.

The mentioned open font library offers a pretty decent collection.

They have a list of the licenses they support, and
you can search fonts by specific licence categories, like
public domain,
freeware,
gnu and
open font license.

There are other categories as well like creative commons and they provide the fonts to use in css too.

Yes, all the drm and licensing has really put me off the whole idea of buying fonts, apparently at one stage there was even a pay per glyph viewed font licensing system.
