Sorry for the recent outage - recommend a new host?

Postby microUgly » Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:28 pm

Sorry for the outage today. Fortunately I was able to fix it but my host, servage.net, doesn't give access to the raw log files which means I can't determine what the cause was.

Because I can't access the log files I think I'll have to switch hosts, otherwise I just can't ensure this site will be stable. If anyone can recommend a host, please let me know.

I use http://www.byethost.com

Not sure if they offer what you are looking for, but customer service is rather good. Maybe chat with them and see?

I use nearlyfreespeech.com for everything I do. Cheap and good. Plus great customer service.

I use DreamHost. Let me know if you decide to go with them though. I'll get a referral credit, and I believe I can get you a discount as well.

Otherwise, for free, in the spirit of Inkscape, I would gladly host this forum. That might include me hosting the domain, and then me giving you the ownership. That may not be appropriate for you, so if you are looking to purchase hosting, I'd still suggest DreamHost.

In fact, I went ahead and put my affiliate link in those DreamHost URLs. I can also make specific discounts for you (which comes out of my $97 referral award). Which, in the spirit of Inkscape I'd gladly do. Private message me if you are interested.

By the way, their customer service and turnaround times are by far the best I have ever encountered.

I am using A Small Orange for some time, and it's really good with very good customer support, I would highly recommend it.

No offence to FooManChu but, I would recommend against using Dreamhost. It has huge number of negative reviews, with a reputation of greatly overselling and un-competent customer support.

For reading reviews and finding out more about hosting services, try Webhostingtalk forums, one of the largest web hosting community.

I'll second the recommendation of NearlyFreeSpeech.NET. Very economical and their support is fantastic. They also give you full access to apache logs. :D

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking into Dreamhost at the moment - trying to find out how it's speed is. Speed is one of the biggest problems I have with Servage... although it seems quite good today.

NearlyFreeSpeech sounds pretty good, but I use my host to backup a large volume of files and at $0.01/MB it doesn't work out so cheap.
