speed modelling challenge

Postby Lazur » Sun Jan 17, 2016 2:39 am

Challenge took over at irc #smc.
You can enter the channel through inkscape's site too, chat now joining smc by entering /join #smc.

The idea is to produce something on a theme within a given time limit.
Idea originates in blenderartists, and most work is done by using it, but it's not a must. There was even music related smc before -so using inkscape is just fine.

Is it a different amount of time for each challenge? I'm not a very speedy Inkscape user. In fact, I'm downright slow!

But I do want to start up more drawing challenges and contests at Inkscape Community. When are these speed challenges announced, Lazur? So I can log on at the right time, and announce IC challenges.

I'm new to this, but it goes as someone announces the theme by random, the duration and starting time, then anyone who is there can join in by typing "!in". The speed IS an important factor, you don't have time to hesitate or to polish/correct the composition. Good practice on tools and their effect, and how to implement an idea without dead-ends.

A fly covered in butter? lol :D

What about "butterflys words"? I could do a 33 minute drawing on that.

Out of curiosity, why do they choose odd times, like 33 minutes, instead of even 30 min? or 35?

I don't know. Maybe 33 could be typed faster?
But anyone can set up a challenge, choose the time and theme. Haven't tried it myself though.

Made this one with tiled clones -wasn't a good choice because the lagging with the 27 MB made it impossible finishing strict within 25 minutes.

These are all very interesting and skillfully done ! Especially the 'Rockets' are impressive.

How did you make the stars of your 'galaxy' piece ? Tiled Clones again or Spray Tool...or ...?

The 'Fox' was made with the brush you posted on OpenClipart, right ?

And the bend 'electric Pizza' stripes ? Is that Pap ?

Thank's!

The stars were made with the spray tool, then size scaled with the tweak tool, then distributed randomly with the align and distribute panel.

The fox was made with a pattern along path lpe, with spiro path on the pen tool, nodes adjusted manually after.
The brush was made custom, it takes a few minutes only to draw a usable shape.

The stripes were also made with pattern along path lpe, but there the brush shape was based on interpolate subpaths lpe.

dragon
Started as 40 minute challenge, tweaked a bit more.

(Also the thumbnail is generated by inkscape 0.91 (?) so it's a bit off at openclipart.)

Maaan, look at that output, the sheer number of pieces! My favorite so far, I think, is the dragon from yesterday. Looks pretty vicious. Reminds me a bit of that tall castle picture of yours, you know, the 50+MB svg from a while ago. All very interesting stuff. I couldn't do that... simply not the way I draw. Very cool!

Thank you!

To be honest that's not the way I draw either... just trying to get away from the overproduced look usually going way below the radar. The time limit is really a challenge, forcing to develop a drawing method that is easy as a pie.
That dragon was drawn in more than 40 minutes though -the links shows how it looked after the deadline. Could go on an on with it for hours.

Today's challenge was "skellicopter", in 40 minutes.
