textile art

Postby ha1flosse » Mon Jul 13, 2015 10:34 pm

hello,

back again, i want to share some of my actual work in textile art with you. since i am still working with inkscape in the "production process", i hope you share the opinion that this is a good place to show and maybe inspire.

i've been into the idea doing some non-digital artwork for a while now, because it felt like there is a lack of balance regarding the effort doing digital artwork and the effort doing non-digital stuff.

i personally think the exhibit of art is almost as exciting as the process of doing art, so i decided to dig a bit into textile art simply because you can wear the stuff, if you use casual clothing as canvas, and show your artwork to the world without any need for a gallery and you get direct feedback, verbally and emotionally from the people around you.

one of the simplest ways to get your artwork onto the canvas is by stamping with textile colors. so you just need a handy stamp, colors and a textile to start printing.

i recently made a stamp i am calling "cloud dog" by sketching the graphics with inkscape. after printing the graphics onto rubber i've been cutting the stamp out of it:

now i just printed a first white layer as a primer for the second colored layer. finally i've been fixing the colors by ironing.

that's all, simple isn't it? tell me how do you like it..

LOVE IT!

Are you going to sell them? Or it's just for yourself?

hey Maestral and brynn thanks a lot, i really appreciate it!

i am still experimenting with colors and stamps and any time soon, i'm looking forward to sell some pieces in limited editions. because every piece is handmade from start to finish and unique, there will be no mass production of clothing. cool thing is, the whole production process is already sustainable, from bio-cotton-shirts/sweats produced and purchased under fairtrade conditions to waterbased eco-colors. the printing method doesn't need any toxic cleaners like the detergents used in screen printing so i can finally offer the clothes with clean conscience.

..and of course i am wearing them myself, in the first place to exhibit the artwork to the world around me.

..back again with something new to show.

i've discovered a nice book about traditional polynesian art, espc. tattooing at the marquesas islands, a while ago. i really like the obvious simpleness of the symbols and the interesting compositions of patterns containing variations of the symbols for "kea" - seaturtle and "pohu" - hero. so i did a "kea" and "pohu" - arc as close as possible to the traditional patterns and made 2 stamp - tiles of it.

while sketching a shirt - print with blender i was wondering how you feel about this design - approach.

p.s.: brynn, i would be proud if you'd' like to wear a shirt! just as i am posting some prints and ideas here in the future, tell me if you like a particular one and i will send you a shirt free delivered to you or a post station of your choice. feel free to send a PM and tell me the size you're wearing and the shirts' base - color you'd like.

When I was reading the first part of the last message, and I saw the quarter circle tile, I thought it was going to be a full circle made of 4 "stamps" -- just 1 big circle. So I was surprised to see how you used the design, in the animation.

I think a single big circle would make viewers focus more on the design and the symbolism. But with many stamps which form sort of a pathway or design, it gives a different kind of symbolism. Is the pathway or journey part of that culture? I guess in an island culture like that, the pathway is more on water, than on land? That's a part of the world that I wish I could visit someday....although there's little to no chance it would ever happen. But I watch travel shows on tv.

Oh, that's such a kind and sweet offer, to send me a shirt. But if I can purchase a shirt, then I can support the kind of people who make products that are safe for the environment (like you, the people who make the fabric, who make the thread, who sew the shirt, etc.). Then that promotes the idea and the movement. Wearing them is 1 way to promote, but buying and wearaing is even bigger way! I was just wondering if you were going to sell them online (like dillerkind uses one of those online services/stores, to sell shirts with some of his drawings). (Plus, other people might like to buy as well.) However, if this is the only way to get one, I'll give it some thought, and let you know :D

..glad you were surprised and this is not too boring.

you see it is in the eyes of the beholder. i'm not aiming for symbolic meanings with the pattern, just wanted to mix up the tiles a bit to something interesting as there are a lot of possibilities - the circle is just one of them. but you ask the right questions - isn't the pathway or journey part of every culture? right, the polynesians were masters of sailing, seems like they used the pathways of modern shipping hundreds of years before the invention of other cultures' sailing ships that can cross the oceans. sadly, the conquest of the marquesas by europeans followed the genocide and there are just some fragments of their culture left, spread over several museums.

..you never know where the pathway or journey is leading, right? so maybe you will visit the places you see in tv since you're already getting in touch with those places by watching travel shows - who knows?

big thanks for your support. i like your attitude. at this point of textile works, i don't think i'll sell too many of them. due to the production-process i can't even put a price on a shirt that is affordable regarding the hours of work i'll have to put into the print of a single shirt like this. gladly i am not looking forward to make big money with the textiles. if i have to sell it for 15 bucks because of the competition in textile market, i'll better enjoy to wear the shirts myself and give some to family and friends.

i admire dillerkinds approaches to publish art on shirts and sell them this way, but it won't work for me as i am producing the print myself. so i could sell the shirts via my website, and maybe i will do this in the future, but now i am more into experimenting with prints. that's why the number of shirts of a particular print is very limited actually.
