OutLiningCutsEdges@BoundingBox.AddMargin?

Postby Jason Nail » Wed Mar 23, 2011 6:34 am

Hello. Jaso here.(Mac OSX 10.5.8/X11 2.6.1/InkScape48.1)

I have an image (1800# as an SVG file in InkScape) that I want to make an outline of. (using the outline filter) But, when I do the outline, the top and bottom edges of the image are clipped off by the bounding box defining the selection.

Is there a way to set a margin, to make the 8 arrows back up enough pixels to contain the selection after it has been outlined? I also wanted to add another filter which would require moving the selection's bounding box even further back.

I tried importing PNG's with and without backgrounds, tracing them with and without backgrounds, and can't seem to find what InkScape requires to make the filter extend beyond the original selection's bounding box. I saw the fit page to selection in doc setup, but I need a scale selection to bounding box tool (percentage or pixels). Is there such a beast or a workaround? Maybe with layers? (I was trying that too)

Thank you very much!

PS. Brynn, believe it or not, I have only done a few pieces that were presentable in my lifetime. At the time, Deluxe Paint IV allowed me to produce one piece that to this day would look pretty good. I don't think I have that 3.5" anymore though.( As a hobby over the years, I eventually made a few more pieces using an Amiga emulator on my Mac so I could use DP4 all over again. Then a few years ago, I found the GIMP. Then a few of my pieces took some real improvement. Now, I am working with InkScape and SVG, I think those same pieces will show new detail and dimension. But, I haven't had time to do that lately, as I am trying to put a demo together for a job prospect. As soon as I make it to the next level, I will upload some art. I also made some hybrid images using modo. This application would more than suffice for the fella' with the Masking Problem that Mr Druban is helping with. In fact you can custom input the amount of times an image bounces back (off two mirrors [or 2 mirrorlike surfaces]).

Hi Jaso,
In Inkscape Preferences > Tools, there is a choice between visual bounding box and geometric bounding box. I think it's visual by default, which should contain filter effects. Maybe you changed to geometric for some reason? But the visual bounding box will contain the full filter effects. If this isn't the problem, then I'm not sure....

You can change the size of the filter effects region for each applied filter effect in the 'Filters > Filter Editor…' (in the 'Filter General Settings' tab).

I would recommend to group a filtered object before applying a second filter effect, and apply the filter to the new group. Thus you can avoid merging the filter primitives, and can adjust - if needed - the filter effects region for each applied effect separately.

Wow! That was fast!

Yes, I checked in tool preferences. It was at default, visual. I tried geometric for good measure, and got the same result. The visual even says it is for handling filters. The image was traced to bitmap with remove background which shifted the eight arrows up close and tight to the resulting SVG. Even if I were to trace without removing the background (and the eight arrows are outside on the background perimeter), & make my outline (filter), I get the same result. I will go back and try every way I know how and document each try and report.

OK. Thank you very much!

PS. Is there a link to upload an image to you? Is it projected for this forum to handle avatars in the future?

Whoa! That was so fast it happened before I could respond. Kind of like superluminal viewing!

Thank you ~SUV. I will have to go check that out!

Is there a link to upload an image to you?

Yes, below the submit button there are 2 tabs -- Options and Upload Attachment. Choose Uupload Attachment and follow prompts. Not all of our forums offer this, though.

Regarding avatars, this forum does allow avatars, access through User Control Panel. But it does not offer choices. You have to have your own avatar hosted somewhere else (like ImageShack, etc.).

Hhmm, I'm not sure if you could upload an avatar as an attachment to a message, and use that link to display the avatar through User CP???? Probably not advisable  So in other words, this forum does not have a gallery, like other more portal-like forums.
