Hello all, I'm a CAD designer who just got introduced with Inkscape. I really like the program (Inkscape that is.... and AutoCAD too for that matter).
Anyways, just seeing if there are some fellow users aboard. I know that sometimes us CAD operators need a vector-based application such as Inkscape to handle certain tasks so I figure there might be some users lingering.
Anyways, thought I'd share a recent project I completed at work last week. It's a MDR (Manual Diverter Roller) which essentially is attached to baggage X-Ray machines in the airport, allowing security to grab a bag and divert it off the main conveyor if they have suspicion. Here's the detailed PDF file of the final product.
Any AutoCAD users here?
Re: Any AutoCAD users here?
Yup! I'm an engineer and I've been using AutoCAD since I was about 16 years old. I'm nearly 40 now. Inkscape has been a big part of my workflow for various illustrations and documentation for quite a few years.
Here's a simple illustration of how I combined 3D Autodesk Inventor models with hands that I had drawn in Inkscape. I'll sometimes use AutoCAD as a bridge in between files.

Re: Any AutoCAD users here?
Ah, very nice!! I knew there would be some users in here that were a CAD background.
I really like your detail too. And I have already used Inkscape to act as a bridge between AutoCAD as well, a few weeks ago I had a client who had a logo that I needed to get into a DWG format for their Titleblock. That's what originally got me interested in Inkscape. Needless to say it was flawless conversion.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Any AutoCAD users here?
Welcome to InkscapeForum!
There have been MANY AutoCAD users posting messages over the years. I don't know how many "regulars" here may also have such a background. Because for example, I didn't know about heathenx's experience with it at all.
Personally I'm not even sure what CAD or AutoCAD is, lol. But I get the feeling it's used for technical and/or engineering type of drawings. Inkscape is defintely good for that! Someone posted some excellent drawings they made of some gears, a couple of years ago, or so. I think it was in either the Work in Progress, or Finished Work forum. Please feel free to browse

brynn,
If you want to get a taste of CAD then I highly recommend DraftSight. It's pretty much and AutoCAD clone and it's completely free and works on Win, Lin, and Mac. It has a very handy export to svg feature as well. It opens Inkscape's dxf exports pretty well too. Even though I have AutoCAD 2012 installed, I sometimes use DraftSight just for the speed and simplicity. Plus, I can use it on my Linux Mint workstation. Check it out.

Re: Any AutoCAD users here?
DraftSight is awesome. Another good one is ProgeCAD Smart! but it leaves a watermark on anything you print or export as PDF.
In fact, my AutoCAD experience I feel has made my transition very easy with Inkscape.

Here's a new render from today. Link to full image: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4989089/Images/ ... -20/05.png
This is of a pump room for a chilled water piping system. Showing are 12" chilled water hydronic piping on a three pump system, with a vertical expansion tank sitting on an equipment pad. Just thought I'd share.

Very nice!

Hello! I am a Mechanical Engineer and AutoCAD user ...but I primarily use Solidworks. I stumbled about Inkscape and SVG in search of a way to develop a sort of interactive drawing that can be manipulated by customers on the web to fit their requirements then and sent to the shop for production. But I am a complete newb to SVG, Inkscape, and web programming in general but I am having so much fun learning!
