possibility to create a whole linked SVG-website

Postby kookaburra » Wed Jan 30, 2008 8:42 am

:tool_tweak:
First of all: Thank you for this great open-source Tool Inkscape !!!

:tool_node:
I think the possibility to create a whole linked SVG-website with
Inkscape would be a huge step forward for the SVG-technique !

:tool_connector:
A special view-mode (browser-like) can offer similar potential for local purposes like the
oneNote-tool of the m$-office software.

oneNote-Trail: http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/onenote/default.aspx

unfortunately i'm not familia with programming in phyton, but if I could,
first of all I would Implement this hot-stuff !

by the way: Is it hard to learn phyton ??

An SVG website is something that I am interested in as well. Unfortunately I have had to drop it for the time being since I am busy with other things. I have made a very basic mock up on my personal website but it is no where near completed. You'll need an SVG capable browser like FF3 or Opera 9.5. FF2 still renders things incorrectly. Also, Nicu has a prototype as well at http://svg.nicubunu.ro if you want to check out his site.

Well, those two sites are a good excuse to not do SVG. Mainly because they totally ignore everything about typesetting. That's about 600 years of knowledge completely ignored.

Haha! Harsh, dude!

Yeah, well, in my defense it's just a starting point. Like the first sentence of a brilliant novel. (<- laying it on thick, there) I'll go hang my head lowly for the rest of the day. Might even spit on a kitty if I see one.

Wow what a fantastic idea!

Guys that is really cool to think that an .svg image file can be used to create a webpage without knowing any html. Considering how messy html standards are, to be able to use an Inkscape .svg file might be a lot easier for people who are naturally artistic. When you think about Inkscape and Openclipart being mostly useful for people who are doing Desktop Publishing, Scrapbooking etc to be able to export a webpage directly from Inkscape would be a powerful tool.

As for 600 years of typesetting we are in the 21st century, and media publishing doesn't have to conform to medieval ideas of formatting. Typesetting does have its palace but we are talking about a powerful experiment that could help 'average Joe' users turn their art into webpages without knowing CSS or HTML.

I think it's quite practical for a single page document - it's kinda like a combination of HTML and PDF. You get the benefit of viewing the document without a plugin whilst having DTP-like control over the layout like you get with with PDF's.

I originally attempted to make my Quick Guide in Inkscape, but lack of support for styles and not being able to position objects relative to text meant managing the overall content and layout would have been quite tedious and time consuming.

For reference, the Opera team has done quite a lot of work with using SVG for web pages - http://dev.opera.com/articles/svg/
