Where can I upload my images?

Postby microUgly » Mon Jun 04, 2007 2:48 pm

There are plenty of websites that will host your images at no charge. Here's a few I'm familiar with:

Image Hosts
  • ImageShack - No registration required.
  • imgh.us - No registration required.
  • PicOodle
  • deviantArt - You can post deviantArt work on this forum using [da=pixel_height]ID_Number[/da] (see below for more details)
File (SVG) Hosts
  • Dropbox - Allows hotlinking of images including SVG files for displaying within posts.
  • MediaFire - No registration required, up to 100MB per file.

To display a JPG, GIF or PNG image in the forum, use [img]http://www.example.com/image.jpg[/img].

To display an SVG in the forum use [svg]http://www.example.com/image.svg[/svg].

To display deviantArt work in the forum, use [da=pixel_height]ID_Number[/da].
  • The ID_Number should be replaced with ID number of the art work which you can identify from the URL. For example, if the URL for your art is http://microugly.deviantart.com/art/Alice-colours-62364252/, then the ID_Number is 62364252.
  • The height is specified in pixels and you can simply guess and check what value to provide. But if you want to know for sure, check the height value in the first part of the embed code on the deviantArt page. For example from this sample of embed code, "<object width="450" height="702"><param name=...", we can see the height should be 702.
  • You must place a tick beside 'Enable deviantMOBILE and blog access' when submitting your work on deviantArt for the DA BBCode to work.
Based on this example the final code will look like:

Code: Select all

[da=702]62364252[/da]

The dA code wouldn't work for me. It said, the image does not exist. I have the image in my scraps folder and originally, I had "enable blog access..." unchecked but after reading your instructions, I went back and enabled it. So anyway, it still does not work -- or does dA not allow free accounts to do such a link?

I tried to insert a PNG image file but it didn't work, the image didn't display.
I assume jpg files can be inserted but not png files...
Given that Inkscape exports only in png format, it would be nice if we could insert png files :)

Unfortunately, DeviantArt doesn't allow "blog access" to scraps - you should see that you don't have a "Embed" code displayed on the page.

PNG's will display fine using the [img] tag. You might need to double check you've got the URL correct.

To host SVGs in such a way that they can be displayed on the forum like any other picture with any other host, use: http://www.petaimg.com/ (since this forum is all about SVGs, I think this should be THE place to host pictures, unless anyone knows any other SVG-friendly image hosts (note that this is an image host not a file host)).
Win 7/10, Inkscape 0.92.2

I've added it to the list.

petaIMG is a strange image hosting solution. I don't see how they make money. There's only two ads at the upload page and since you hot-link to the files it won't attract visitors. I'm looking for the catch :) I wonder if it will last.

How about http://www.bountee.com/? SVG on a tee (100% cotton), up to some 500 million colours (no 4-8 colour limit), gradients too, and Inkscape friendly (they recommend it!)? They are supposed to be updating their site soon to include poster prints as well. The quality of resolution, colour, gradients, printing and quality of the tees is superb- I bought two of my designs. The current site is a bit buggy (search doesn't work), but the upcoming new site is promising. Thought it worth sharing. Here are my designs: http://www.bountee.com/user/l-a-baird

-Infinite Blessings!

This is really confusing for me.
See, I downloading Inkscape thinking that when you save it, it'll become an image.
I just downloaded it today, and I finished my first project on it then
I tried downloading it on photobucket, then I went to google for help and I found this topic.
I went to one of those places and said the project I had saved isn't an image.
I didn't understand,
and hopefully you will help.
Please reply.

Thank you for your time.

Reason: Font-size reduced and un-bolded. Abusing emphasis is poor forum etiquette.

It's an image, but they want a bitmap image. Use the "Export Bitmap" option on the File menu to make a bitmap version of your image.

Hmmm, it would appear that inline svgs crash chrome...
Although only that tab, which is a nice change versus other browsers that just bomb.

Hello,

I sent petaIMG a mail asking if they'd be willing to unblock the australian IP range 150.101.etc., and I'm waiting for an answer.

Other than that (blocked IPs), uploading and seeing SVGZ files works fine for me. Are you experiencing problems?

As I mentioned elsewhere (warning, long reads - viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1431
and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1438)
when I contacted petaIMG about the problems you're asking about micro, they said they would notify me when they fixed it. I have not been notified of such. That said, maybe the unblocking of such a range of addresses could at least somewhat relieve those problems. (Especially if you access the internet from Australia??) Best way to test, try to open the images in above threads, hosted at petaIMG ;)

Off topic:
I am in Australia and also contacted PetaIMG about the problem. They were able to see it themselves. It's only fresh image that I was not able to access. Images that had been hosted for a few days could be accessed.

I wonder what is wrong with Australia :)

For the people blocked from the petaIMG service, they can still upload and see .svg and .svgz files through a proxy, for example:

http://www.netevader.info/index.php?# (uploading and viewing through this one have been tested).

Interesting...My experience is just the opposite. I CAN access the freshly loaded image, but some time within the next few hours, access becomes intermittent (mostly unable to access)
