The original first post from this thread follows below...

I'm writing a series of Inkscape tutorial articles for Full Circle Magazine. The first is available now in issue #60, and is a sort of prequel which introduces the SVG format. The proper tutorials will start next month.

Full Circle Magazine is nominally a Ubuntu Linux mag, but my tutorials are largely applicable to Inkscape users on Windows or MacOS too. I'll be starting with absolute basics, but eventually hope to work my way through to fairly advanced features - and along the way offer up a few of the tips and tricks we've found while drawing our comics over the past three years.

Issue #60 is available now for free download in PDF, EPUB and Google Currents formats.

Thank you, Xav, for the link and the article. I'm looking forward to your future installments.

Good combo: Ubuntu, Inkscape, GIMP, other Linux-related articles... I mean, what more could I ask? And it makes it more enjoyable knowing a familiar forum poster is contributing. Thanks for that.

Well done, Xav!
Already bookmarked :D This will be my new "go to" link for message replies where I need to explain vector vs raster. I used to refer to Wikipedia, but your explanation is much more clear and understandable, especially for those technically uninclined folks like me. The Wikipedia one is fairly technical, and a bit obtuse (imo).

Thanks for the support :D

I'm trying to keep each tutorial fairly self contained, dealing with just one or two aspects of the software at a time, but in an order that will allow even absolute beginners to draw something right from the start. In the past they've released special editions of Full Circle which pull together a number of articles from a series into a single-subject tutorial magazine. I'm hoping for something similar, once I've amassed enough articles, that can be used as a useful resource to point complete beginners at.

Issue #61 of Full Circle Magazine is now available for free download, and includes Part 1 of my Inkscape tutorial. It starts from the very basics, so in this instalment I cover drawing circles, arcs and segments and enough other basics to enable you to draw a simple snowman - however, given the tropical weather we're having in the UK at the moment, I'm not sure it's the most timely of images

I've been very lax in promoting these tutorials over the past couple of months, but they've still been appearing in the magazine. Here are the latest couple to bring this thread up to date (at least for a few days):

Issue #67, with part 7 of my tutorial (paths and Boolean operations).

Issue #68, with part 8 of the tutorial (selections and groups).

Wow, for some reason, I thought this was a short term project, like a series of 6 or 8. But I guess it looks like it's ongoing?

Thank you xav,
I'm going to download it now.

Edit:
ahah! I've got it. Great tutorial.
Someone should tell the full circle team that the link
to your tutorial in the magazine's contents table, actually leads to an SQlite tutorial.
Your tut is on page 26, but the other is on page 21. As a matter of fact, I think most, if not all the links in the table of contents are wrong.
Looks like articles were moved after the table was created and no one remembered to change it to reflect the changes to the magazine.

Once I scrolled down and found the Inkscape tutorial It was very good.
Basic information was given clearly, and it was easy to follow and informative.
It was also enjoyable to read. Tutorials can be very dry and tedious , so its always nice
to come across one that manages not to be, while remaining on topic and being easy to follow.
I'll be looking for the installment that covers masking when it comes out.

Just downloaded issue 74 of full circle
and thought I'd take a minute to say thanks for the tutorial.
You did a good job with it.
I liked the examples that you used, and as usual the writing was clear, to the point, and easy to follow.
I dont like to use masks and clipping, but your explanations gave me some ideas to try out
so maybe I will play around with them a bit and see what I can do.
p.s.
The snowman made me smile

Thanks for the support :D

I rarely use masks, but clipping is something that is present in almost all of our comic strips. It can be especially useful in a comic for stopping the content hard at the edge of the frame, or for making an object appear to pass behind something else, regardless of the layers.

As for the snowman, he's been an ongoing development throughout the series. I wanted people to have enough knowledge after reading Part 1 to be able to draw something, and a snowman seemed like a good choice as a simple version can be created with just circles.

The first seven parts of the tutorial, plus the "prequel" article about the SVG file format, have now been compiled into their own a special edition:
