open .eps file in Inkscape

Postby lucabrasi » Mon Dec 02, 2019 10:29 am

I bought some Hebrew alphabet letters on Cutcaster.com. They are vector images.

The download gave me 2 files. One was an image of the 22 letters, the other file was an eps file.

I am told that the .eps file can be opened up by Inkscape, so I can use the individual letters of the Hebrew alphabet to spell words.

I am hoping to make some flash cards of Hebrew words that will be a screensaver for me. So I would use the 22 letters individually to spell different words. But this is not happening. All I have is one picture of 22 Hebrew letters on a flat surface. The letters cannot be seperated or rearranged to spell anything in this format.

Anyway, I have installed Ghostscripts but can't tell if Inkscape is using it or not. I am guessing an .eps file is some sort of layered file, like you might see in Blender 3D

Right now all I see is the 22 letters on a flat sheet of paper, so they are not seperated so I can use them to spell words.

Any ideas on how to get started.

Literally, all I want to do is spell a Hebrew word, put its meaning in English below it. if I can make an image file for each one of the words with their definition, Windows 10 will turn all those files into a screen saver for me.

Any ideas on how I might accomplish this.

If the letters are visually separate then there will certainly be a way to split them into individual objects within Inkscape.

The first thing to do is to select them and see what it says on the status bar at the bottom of the screen. If it says 'group' then you might be lucky and be able to simply ungroup them (Object > Ungroup). If it's a single path, probably with lots of nodes, then you'll need to use the Boolean operations to separate them into individual objects (Path > Difference, Intersection etc). It's also possible you might have a group that contains a single path, or some other combination, but looking at the status bar and seeing what you've got (and perhaps posting a screenshot here) is the first step.

I also tried to add Ghostscript by following these directions:
https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/ind ... opic=811.0
I followed the Youtube video and I still get the error message.

I even moved the variables up to the top of the list and that did not fix it. But. There were only 3 variables in my list. 2 that I added the "bin" and "lib" paths and the path that was there before.
Any ideas??
Thanks

Sorry, I misunderstood your problem. I thought you were able to load the EPS, but the letters were all combined into one object. I don't know anything about the issue with loading the EPS file in the first place. The only thing I can suggest is trying a couple of the free online format convertors to see if they can successfully convert the file to an SVG.

If the 'image file' (by which I presume you mean a PNG or JPEG) is good enough quality you might be able to get around the problem by using the tracing feature in Inkscape. That will create a single composite path that then needs additional work to split into separate letters, but it shouldn't be too tricky.

I will give it a shot. Thanks for helping
You were right, the letters are all combined into one file. I didn't state my problem very clearly. Sorry
Anyway,
I am not very adept with Inkscape but I have used the trace feature before, so I should be able to figure it out if it comes to that.
I hope to have some time to work on it this weekend.
I will also try a free converter too.
If none of that works and I can figure out how to get it loaded into Inkscape I will come back and ask more dumb question

THanks for helping me.

Ghostscript instructions are also available in the FAQ, maybe those are detailed enough? See https://inkscape.org/learn/faq/#how-ope ... es-windows .
