If I want to use a font, which I purchased online, without the alternate characters (i.e. swashes on the letters), what do I do to access the "original" font? I understand this has something to do with the glyphs panel, but I'm not sure how to use that and it seems like I can't change anything there.
Help appreciated, thanks in advance!

Using font without the alternate characters
Re: Using font without the alternate characters
Hi.
Are you sure the characters without the swashes are part of the font you have?
Check the font on the character table /or similar if not on windows.
As far as I know you cannot access fonts installed with the mentioned panel. It is there for creating svg fonts, that can help using fontforge after.

Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I'm sure because on my old laptop I can use the font without swashes, but on my new laptop it's only with swashes. This is true both for Inkscape and GIMP.

Re: Using font without the alternate characters
The next Inkscape version will have a fine-grained interface for selecting which font-variant and how much 'decoration' you want to use. Until that is available, unfortunately, you will have to click yourself through the glyphs dialog.
When you're there (Text -> Glyphs), select the font you want to use first.
Then, to see all available characters, choose 'all' and 'all' in the dropdowns. If you're lucky, your font is 'small' and there isn't so much - else you may want to try out if one of the subsets from the dropdown is enough.
You can insert a letter into your text (start writing one first!) by double-clicking on any letter in the list, then click on 'append' (it works, even if the button is greyed out - seems to be a bug... :/ ).

Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!

Re: Using font without the alternate characters
Very interesting topic! Thank you, Annjal.
I thought that a font would come with different versions of it and that the swashes belonged to a 'sub font' like in Arial Black versus Arial.
Your question made me make a research http://www.fonts.com/content/learning/f ... characters
