How do I upload an SVG to show in the forum?

Postby flamingolady » Sat Jul 18, 2009 6:04 am

I've tried several times to upload my (first) SVG file onto the thread where you can upload and share your SVG artwork, but it won't load. When I hit the 'Add the File' key to upload the SVG file, I get the message that it doesn't accept SVG files. Is this a bug in v46? or do I need to convert it to a JPEG or PNG or something else in order to upload the file? Maybe there's a tip I'm not aware of... I've searched the FAQ and threads but haven't seen any advice on how to do this (I'm still a newbie, sorry). any ideas appreciated.
thx

The only thing I can suggest is that maybe the svg is too big. There's a max filesize of 256 Kb.

I usually upload the image (in .png format) to either DeviantArt or photobucket and then use the IMG tag to put the image into posts.

oh, didn't know 256 is the limit. Just checked and my file is only 25 kbs. I attempted to upload a png file and got the same message (the extension png is not allowed). I'm stumped.

Could someone post an example of how to use the tag to upload, for us newbies? I haven't done html in many yrs, so am clueless, lol.
thx.

Well, it seems .SVGs can be uploaded in the forums, witness my test above. But this is not the 1st thread I've seen where folks had trouble with .SVGs.

I attempted to upload a png file and got the same message (the extension png is not allowed).

Now that really IS weird, because I know for a fact that .PNGs are allowed.

Could someone post an example of how to use the tag to upload, for us newbies? I haven't done html in many yrs, so am clueless,

I'm not sure about "using the tag to upload". But I can outline uploading, and inserting an image using tags (2 different things).

Uploading attachments to the forums should be straightforward. Below the text editor, click the "Upload attachment" tab. Next, click Browse to choose the image you want to upload as an attachment. Next click "Add the file". Now you can continue typing or editing your message if necessary. Or if you're finished, click Submit. This will produce what you see in my message above.

To use the Insert Image tags, you 1st have to have your image hosted somewhere (ImageShack, PhotoBucket, petaIMG, etc.). Once you have uploaded your image to your host, your host will provide either the URL or your image, or some of them provide you the exact code that you need. If it provides the URL, then all you need to do is start a new line in your message, where you want your image to appear. Then click the "Img" button above the message box. This will give you this: [img]nospace[/img] except there will actually be no space (or letters) where I've typed "nospace". (If I leave it blank like you'll actually see it, it disappears when I click Submit.) Then just put your cursor in between the ] and [ brackets and paste in the URL. So it will look something like this [img]URL%20of%20image[/img]. And after you click Submit, your image will appear in place of it (or I like to click Preview, to make sure the image is showing up like I want, before Submitting).

If your host provides you with the exact code, then just paste the code into the message box, and after you click Preview or Submit, your image will appear. (The code is basically the tags + the URL, already in the proper format needed.)

I hope I've covered everything you need. But if I missed something, just ask, and I'll try to explain :D

Image uploading hasn't been allowed in all forums--perhaps an unnecessary precaution to a) prevent abuse and b) encourage you to use more persistent hosting services.

Mostly images can only be uploaded to the collection of "General Inkscape Topics" forums. Not many image hosting sites support SVGs so I had to allow uploads for the sake of being able to help people.

The "Show It Off" forums do not allow image uploads because there are more reliable services for hosting finished work. Each user has a limited amount of space on this site you may need to delete your images before you can upload more, which can be really annoying for those who read old topics.

There's no way you could have known that, so sorry for the frustration it must have caused.

:? So did you just now disallow SVGs in this forum? Because my test file originally uploaded and was attached beautifully (back on July 17th). Now I see this

Oh, or did you move the topic into a disallowed forum? That's probably explains it?

Yeah, that is what has happened.
