Special text characters

Postby AnalogueMan » Sun May 31, 2015 5:37 am

How can I include a special text character in text? I want to include the Greek character mu.
Cannot find any clue in Text > Glyphs.. or else to get things done.
Also a search on this Forum did not show anything for help.

Another resource for you....well, there's always the manual, which is at Help menu > Inkscape manual. Also, Help menu > Tutorials are good for learning. (Although I don't think any of those tutorials cover symbols or text....)

Here's the "official" FAQ: https://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/

And the specific item you're asking about: https://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/#How_ ... he_drawing

not all fonts come with special characters,
especially the free ones often lack these on purpose, so that you need to buy the full set

EDIT: maybe these links can help ?

Hi.

To get the greek letter µ (mu) entered into Inkscape do the following:

Press F8 to get to text mode.
Click with mouse on the canvas (Inkscape lingo for page) where you want your text.
You will now have the text cursor on the canvas.
Press Ctrl U to get into unicode entry mode.
The status line at the bottom of the Inkscape window will now show "Unicode (enter to finish)".
Type 03bc which is the unicode for the µ character, then press Enter (Return), if everything went well you will now have the µ character on the canvas.

For a complete list of the greek letter unicodes have a look here; Greek Unicodes.
Good Luck!

Well guys, thanks for the help especially ragstian. Got right into the desired result after that procedure :D .
And of course I did browse the manual and did work with some quick-start examples to gain some
knowledge but it is the problem that it is not always obvious where to look in the manual to get some result.

B.T.W. I DID go into "Text">"Glyphs" and then selected in "Range" the Greek and Coptic language but after
selecting several fonts, nothing was shown in the window so I gave up. Perhaps too soon

You can use this tool Cool Symbol Picker to choose as many special symbols as you want.

Hi,
I was also having trouble and having tried everything I actually get most symbols on the page now. However, the one I really need - nu - always comes up as a standard "v" no matter what I do. I could fudge it and go for an italic "v" but that is not quite what the symbol is. Any ideas?

Hi.

Works fine using the sans-serif font.
(Some other fonts give you a "plain" v for the same unicode.)

Type:

F8
Ctrl U
03BD
<return>

The unicodes can be found here

Guess the ny just looks like a v in the selected font. Using a different font might help.
