Resizing bitmap images in Inkscape - effect on quality?

Postby seans_potato_biz » Fri Mar 30, 2018 1:32 am

I'm preparing my thesis figures in Inkscape and my figures sometimes include bitmap elements. I'm wondering what happens when I resize bitmaps in Inkscape; does it record the original bitmap so resizing it continually doesn't cause it to degrade? That's what appears to be the case from my messing around but I wanted to know for sure.
Win 7/10, Inkscape 0.92.2

Inkscape just applies a transform to the image, it does not change the image data itself - unless:

- you export to PNG (SVG is unchanged, but of course PNG has the dpi you used for export)
- you filter the image and export to PDF (SVG is unchanged, but of course PDF has the dpi you used for export)
- you use one of the extensions in the 'raster' submenu
Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!

As far as I know, resizing a raster image, even if it's imported into Inkscape, will cause it to pixelate. The only way to avoid it, is to convert the raster to vector.
