How to make a window into shapes behind? (img attached)

I suppose this would be masking.
I need for the white rectangle to show what's just behind it, and the rest to hide.

I hope this is the last question today.

I for sure make a radial gradient and apply it to a rectangle like so:

Why I cannot add more gradient nodes?
When I move the cursor over the line connecting the center square and the small circle on the right, a large + sign appears. So I click on the line, but nothing happens! It won't add a node there.
What am I missing?

double click, or use the plus sign in the control bar of the gradient tool

Now, how do I get them not to mix. But like Polygon has them in his example?

There are two nodes one on top of another (I haven't looked at his file though)

For your original question, you would want to use Clipping rather than Masking.
