Great start

Postby axiom » Tue Jun 05, 2007 11:42 pm

This forum is almost exactly what I had in mind for Inkscape, glad you put it up.

I think that it important that two things happen:

This needs to be the official forum
I think we could get a lot of traffic from new users coming from the inkscape.org page if there was a link there

You need to be able to attach an image while posting
I know you have the imageshack suggestions, and that will work, but it would be a lot better if we could just attach pngs/svgs to our posts. Pictures hosted elsewhere tend to turn into broken links. If we could somehow host them here, they would still be there when people search and find old posts.

Mad props, and good luck.

Inkscape.org is prepared to host a forum, but required volunteers to run it. I probably should have offered my services, but being accountable to an official inkscape community isn't something that appealed to me :) There was a lot of opposition to the creation of a forum.

This is possible. The forum supports it and I have a few hundred GB of space on this host that I will never fill. But I would have to enforce a quota and when a user meets this quota they would have to delete some files, creating broken links in any posts they had posted the images in. With so many free services out there offering generous amounts of storage I'd prefer to encourage people to use them to create online portfolios and link to them from here.

Mad props, and good luck.

Thanks :)

I think there was some opposition on the mailing list, because the people there are used to that kind of thing, but I didn't see everyone there being opposed to it.

You need to find a way to work with the community.

So maybe this is an 'unofficial' forum, but we still need to get a link on the inkscape.org page.

I think that it is very important that new users with questions (who are unlikely to be familiar with mailing lists or IRC) be able to click 'Discuss' and find a link to this or some forum.

might be worth doing some pimpage on DA as well. I mentioned it in my blog, which is in the planet inkscape feed so hopefully some people will notice.

Thankyou for mentioning the forum on the Inkscape blog. And thanks for mentioning my guide - I'm quite proud of it :)

I've now posted a comment on inkscape.deviantart.com and inkscapers.deviantart.com. I wanted to avoid spamming communities but this should be acceptable. I'm hoping google will pick up on it soon.

Even though it's only 14 members at this point, I'm overwhelmed with how quickly new members are arriving. I've been members of forums that have been established for months or even longer that have far less activity.

Sorry about the e-mail issue. I can only assume something was up with my host. I changed how e-mails are sent and am hoping that's got around it.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm still a little concerned it's not functioning reliable so I'll be monitoring it for a while.
