Performance

Postby Rollie » Sun Feb 17, 2008 3:06 pm

Hi,

I've been using Inkscape for my cartoons for about a month and I love it. One thing that I'm curious about is why does it slow down so much the further I zoom in on my drawings? It seems to be the opposite of what I expect - ie the further I'm zoomed in the less the program needs to draw and worry about so I'd expect it to be faster, no?

Regards - Rollie

Sadly that's one issue with Inkscape right now. Bare in mind that it's still a pretty young project and things are still getting worked out! It does slow down sometimes far too much to be workable - I think that for now you just need to learn how to avoid the slow-downs.

This thread has some suggestions on how to do that: http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=491&p=2725&hilit=slow#p2725

All in all Inkscape is wonderful so don't let that deter you from using it!

Thanks for the link Danny. I'll give some of those things a try.

It could be because of the extra precision required when calculating the paths, since it's working with smaller numbers. But that's just a guess.

I guess that would make sense. I was thinking in terms of 3D graphics where they cull as much as they can from the scene prior to rendering but maybe that doesn't translate.
