Our history group is embarking on a major project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which involves designing graphics and layouts for the display panels. Unfortunately I have CorelDraw, our professional graphics artist uses Illustrator. While we can exchange files, there are problems exchanging between these two programs in a way we can both readily edit.

Howe good is Inkscape at outputting files readable by Illustrator and how good is it at reading files output by Illustrator? My apologies if the answer is in the documentation, but before I invest a lot of time in learning Inkscape, it would help to know if it will be usable.

Inkscape does not use a proprietary file type. It uses SVG, a standard format for vector images that should be readable by both Corel Draw and Illustrator. Just make sure that when you save, you change the type to plain SVG.

However, I think you should check if Corel Draw has an option to either save or export as SVG, that may be a better option for you.
