Ians Stuff

Postby ianp5a » Fri Feb 05, 2016 6:36 am

Here's one I did for my TED volunteer interview. The theme is Facets.

Facets by ianp5a, on Flickr

I first drew a grid of lines. Then used the Fill command to click in every square. Then removed the lines. The big work was shading every square with an approximate grey shade. Colour was added later with the Randomise Colour Extension. Then a Colour Saturation increase.

Looks nice :)

Another way to do this could be to draw the grid, convert its stroke to path and union it, then subtract the grid from the base mask, then break apart the mask. Now you've got your tiles.
Then switch to Tweak tool in 'paint the tool's color upon selected objects' mode to do the shading (select the darkest grey shade you want to use for the tool's color). When done, switch tweak tool mode to 'jitter colors' mode, set its width to a high value, set 'force' to a high value, select hue to be changed, then drag it over the tiles until you like the randomization.

Also you could render a 3D .obj file with the render polyhedron extension.

Fantastic result !

I guess you traced the face from an image ?
Still sounds awfully hard to do.

I think the first time i saw something like that was in the movie Tron (the MCP).
Still a great movie to this very day.

I'm going to a wedding on Saturday, where Moira, one of the knitting girls, is marrying one of the biker gang. I drew this after hearing them discussing seating arrangements at the reception.

It's done in the style of the Matt cartoonist from the Telegraph newspaper.

I'm going to frame it and give it to them as a present. I'm so cheap!

This I drew for the Ubuntu Podcast competition. Where the rule says use up to maximum 20 objects. Which is what I did.
It is shaded with gradients and gradient meshes.

Image
I'm now a lot more experienced with gradient meshes. Previously I'd use blur and clips to get a similar result.
In the competition I'm up against any creative work made from 20 items. Including audio and 20 line programs. If I win the laptop I'll let you know.

Very cool! If you make a non-alcoholic version and put 'Inkscape' on it, it might be a good example for the 'screenshots' section on the Inkscape website.

Why non-alcoholic?

Somehow, I'd like that better. I'm not sure it gives a good impression if the project is showing images of alcoholic beverages on the screenshots page. Anyway, I'm not responsible for website contents, it was just my personal opinion. Sorry if it sounded differently!

It's entered into a competition where UK based organisers have a Telegram chat group, where members have a habit of sharing pictures of a cold beer glass while on holiday or somewhere hot. There are people from all over the world there. And I suspect some in the group don't come from a beer liking culture, and possibly have never had beer. I'm always cautious about this, as I work with many different cultures. From Bavaria, where beer is embedded deep into their traditions, to places where beer is absent, and then to the US where attitudes are quite different again.

So you might like to imagine it is the drink of your preference.

I'm disappointed it does not appear as sharp here as the SVG. I see there is an "[svg]" tag here but not sure how to use it.

I think non-alcoholic beer looks pretty much the same? ,)
/no pun intended

To me, it`s a remarkable piece of work if a count of 20 items is taken into consideration. Still, those 'only 20' just adds to your "cheap" nature, as for that wedding present ,)

Moini is a fellow countryman of mine and I believe Germans are generally regarded as friends of the beer :D Though not everybody is the same. The last alcohol/beer I had was some 14 years ago. Haven't missed anything since but I've come to love making fun of alcohol and its much overrated role in society.

So you might like to imagine it is the drink of your preference.

Nah, that doesn't work. The glass, the foam, the color - it's simply a too distinctive look.

That aside, it looks good. Smooth work on the gradients and everything. Only the foam could maybe use some more details, some "bubbling". As for the svg tag, I haven't used that one before but would have imagined that it works the same as the img one. But apparently since you aren't using it, it does not? Recently I wanted to give mesh gradients another go myself - but unfortunately Inkscape crashed every time I tried to adjust the mesh handles. Sooo, mesh gradients and I won't become friends anytime soon.

Yes. The 20 object limit stopped that. And I've not mastered Filters yet. I really want to use perspective textures for roads and walls. Maybe Filters can help there.

That's a shame. I don't know how you can get around that. I often need 'curved' gradients to give a 3D shape to an object. I used to use blur with a clip to get a curved gradient effect.

I missed the 20 object limit part. My bad. Totally understandable that you couldn't do much there with such a tight limit. For curved gradient effects I usually use multiple regular gradients, both linear and radial. Worked fine for years and therefore I'm only mildly annoyed by the mesh gradient crashes LOL I've tried a couple times during the past few years but never got very far. Most times the program would simply crash (this was back when this feature wasn't even "officially in") or I was too impatient. At some point though I'll have to invest some more time into this feature.

Does it crash when you adjust the handles? Or does it crash when you try to Undo? (I find Undo is lately causing a crash in several different circumstances - I haven't figured out a common denominator yet).

The new mesh tool only allows 20 mesh lines, which does start to present performance issues, after a couple of them in one file. But for smaller meshes, I don't see that.

I only tried it for a minute or so recently and didn't spend any more time investigating the matter afterwards. But from what I remember I created the mesh with default row/column count. I could set colors on the intersection nodes but it crashed every time I touched one of the handles that bend the mesh lines. I didn't use undo there (and haven't noticed anything unusual about undo in general lately). I'm using the current version 92.2 I think, which is in general a lot more stable than the previous version. Except for that mesh gradient issue Inkscape hasn't crashed a single time since I switched to this version.
