damaged files - loss of objects

Postby lemonphenomenon » Mon Nov 05, 2018 8:46 pm

I use inkscape version 0.92.2 on a mac OS sierra 10.12.5.

I am working on a file with a lot of objects and suddenly many of them have disappeared, in an apparently random way. For instance, of 68 numbers, each one a separate object, two disappeared a few days ago and now only eight remain. It is not only text objects that are affected. Earlier today I moved a group of objects; it looked fine and I saved the file but when I opened it half an hour later the whole group had vanished.

I have clicked 'select all objects' and there is no dotted box indicating that they still exist. A similar inkscape file has suffered similar losses. I haven't noticed any similar problems with other programmes, like gimp.

Is it possible that these objects are still there but invisible, and if so how can I make them visible again? Or is this a known problem, and if so is there a way I can protect against it? I'd be very grateful for any help

I don't know if that bug is the op's problem. But I've just posted to the bug that I have that same problem, and also subscribed to it. I've been having that problem for some time, but thought it was something I was doing wrong. Geez!

lemonphenomenon, can you share that file with us? Or some file like it? We might be able to find the missing things. Be sure to describe what's missing, so we know what to look for.

Grobe - Thanks for your suggestion. It might be that bug, although as far as I know there are no layers, hidden or otherwise, in the file, just objects. On the other hand I think I read somewhere that layers in inkscape are really just groups of objects, so who knows? Not me. I'm out of my depth.
I saw after making my post that the files' thumbnails said 'this page contains the following errors: error on line xyz at column 36: Encoding error'. The affected files all originated as copies of the first affected file, so I'm hoping it's a one-off blip that I unknowingly passed on to other files. Other inkscape files not copied from the first faulty file haven't been affected, as far as I can see.

Brynn - Yes, here's one of the problem files. You see there are a few numbers - all the other numbers up to 67 were there originally, and all the sections of the snaky line were coloured white, green, yellow or red, not just a few. The blue rectangular background was complete. There was some text outside the blue rectangle but I can't remember how much. It's all stuff I can redo - I just don't want it to disappear again! I'm starting again from scratch and will post again to say what happens.

That file is broken. It contains incomplete markup in various different places. It's hard to tell what caused it.

First thing:

- enable autosaves (Edit > Preferences > Input/Output > Autosave)

Then:

- check your computer's hard disk and RAM for issues

Additionally:

- Make sure that when you save, you give Inkscape enough time to save the file before you close it
Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!

Thanks, Moini. I've enabled autosave and will get the hard drive and RAM checked.

The file looks stepped-on... some program seems to have opened/saved the file with missing and converted tags. Even the filename looks like it was saved by a browser.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

If it still happens when you have checked that it's not a disk or RAM failure, and you gave Inkscape enough time for saving before closing the file, then I think it may be a (new) bug.

Just to have recommend some software that does a good job checking RAM, I put Memtest on that list.

Memtest can be downloaded as a stand alone bootable image, and it also ships with various Linux distros (the boot cd image).

Personally I prefer using Ultimate Boot CD, where Memtest is included.

I use Clonezilla, or Knoppix ;-) (they're always available in our household)
