I have a layer in Inkscape that has around 50 objects. I want to separate these objects out into their own layers. Is there an automated way to do this in Inkscape?
I see that Illustrator has the Release to Layers function and I'm hoping there's something similar in Inkscape. I've seen the Group to Layer Extension but, as the name suggests, it only works on groups.

Re: Separate objects to layers
I have never heard of such an extension, but if the Group to Layer Extension works and has a FLOSS licence, it shouldn't be difficult to adapt it.

I don't know Python, otherwise I'd write an extension/modify that extension myself.

Re: Separate objects to layers
I'd try this:
Select one object, click group.
tab, click group
tab, click group
tab, click group
tab, click group
tab, click group
tab, click group
tab, click group
tab, click group
tab, click group
tab, click group.....
(Tab moves selection to the next object.)
Then, they're all grouped and ready to layerize with the extension.

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Thanks, but I originally asked if there was an automated way to do this. Your method works but if I have a layer with lot of objects it'll take a lot of time.

About 50 sec for 50 objects. I use two hands.

Re: Separate objects to layers
This (WIP) extension has related tools (wrap selected objects in a group (per object), convert selected groups to layers (or sub-layers), etc.):I haven't worked on it (or used it) for almost a year - feel free to use the repository's issue tracker for questions or bugs (there likely are plenty unresolved bugs, and no documentation at this point). Note also that converting a large number of groups to layers is slow - not the part that the extension does, it's inkscape itself which can be very slow to reload the modified document with many new layers.
