hello,
can inkscape import GIMP file?
if it possible, how to synchronize gimp into inkscape for real time editing...example, i import photoshop file [.psd] into illustrator, when i increase brightness in photoshop, the [.psd] file in illustrator is changing real time...it's save time for editing...
thanksss....

Welcome to InkscapeForum.com!
By "GIMP file", you mean the native XCF file format? I don't think so. Although it IS possible to import GGR, GIMP gradient file.
However, if you mean regular raster formats, such at JPG, GIF, PNG, etc. yes Inkscape can import them. But there's no "real-time editting". After you make changes, and click Save, the file is updated. But not in real time, to my knowledge.

Well, now that I think of it, why would you need such a feature? Just out of curiosity.....
Because if you stay in GIMP, you have real time editting, right? Why do you need to edit GIMP files in Inkscape, when you could just use GIMP?

I bounce back and forth between the two all the time when working on my maps:
http://www.cartocopia.com/portfolio/
All the symbols and text is done in Inkscape I save it out as a PNG that gets pulled back into gimp for post-processing and blending.
It is why I wrote my file linked layer script: http://www.silent9.com/incoming/scripts ... layers.scm
Here is a file containing three scripts that all end up under the Layer menus.
Load a new File Linked Layer (loads up an image as a layer and sets the layer name to "@FL@".)
Reload All File Linked Layers (looks though all the layers for ones where the name starts with the "@FL@" flag and reloads them.)
Reload File Linked Layer (reloads the active layer if it has the @FL@ flag.)
Right now it doesn't transfer layer masks, blend modes, or opacity to the newly loaded layers, but that could be added if necessary.
A bit off-topic, I'll admit. Sorry!

Re: Synchronize gimp into inkscape
I do think its a little odd that you can save an Inkscape file as xcf, but not import an xcf file to Inkscape.
Edit:
RobA,
Could you explain how your script foo works, and how to use it, in a way technically challenged people like me can understand?
I like that in Inkscape, I can export almost anything I can save, by just clicking the "save as" button and choosing the file format I want.
I dont know how this functionality is added though.

Re: Synchronize gimp into inkscape
You can do this, but it requires some awareness of what you are saving as and where you are saving it, if I understand what you want.
When you import a bitmap into Inkscape, you have to link, not embed. Now every time that bitmap file is edited and saved, the version in inkscape will automatically update (you have to check 'automatically reload bitmaps' in your prefs).
The catch is that it can't be in .xcf format, because Inkscape does not read that. And GIMP only 'saves' in .xcf, so in GIMP you will have to use the 'export' command to create and update a format that can be linked to in Inkscape, PNG, for example.

Your mind is what you think it is.
Re: Synchronize gimp into inkscape
I'll try to upload my gimp extension
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12668
When I won't be sick anymore and when my screen will work again (coding in 640*580 is boring when your screen is supposed to do 1920*1200)
It won't do realtime. Right now it's not an import plugin for inkscape, it's rather an export plugin for gimp

Inkscape files can be saved as XCF? How? Because I might have answered a message the other day, saying that it couldn't be done. Or maybe you said it backwards -- because you should be able to import an XCF??
