Postby hardface » Sun Feb 03, 2019 2:57 am

I have been at this for days Im trying to union the J to the circles to create monogram Below is the steps ive taken to this point and a pic Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated thx in advance
1) the group of circles are tiled clones then clone link was broke
2) the 2 larger circle have been object to path
When i try to union it all the cloned circles and thew inner circle disappear Ive tried so many different thing to get it to work its impposible to list them all Im sure like always its a simple fix but after days of reasearching reading manuals etc Im still not bright enough to figure it

You will need to use a mix of union and combine. Union for shapes without holes, Combine (or difference) for creating holes. So you will need several steps to make this work.

I'd probably start with combining the two outer circles, then I'd Union the result with the Js, then I'd combine the result with all the tiny circles. Not sure if it works, no file to test.

Quick video of doing this with the file above:

https://framadrive.org/s/dnJ4go334CDX8CN

The problems you probably stumbled upon are:

1. The fill-rule for the circles makes it impossible to see if there are holes in them. Change it.
2. The J letter is a group. Ungroup it.
3. The large circle is on top, which you can't see, because it's partially transparent. Make it opaque and move it to the bottom.

4. The J letter doesn't even touch the circle. I think it was meant to be connected to it. Make it larger, if that is what you want.

FWIW, the pattern of dots is not centered. See today's puzzler: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=34458
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/
