Stupid question - View new posts VS. View active topics

Postby Grobe » Sun Aug 05, 2012 7:10 am

Hi.

Like I wrote in subject field. What is the actual difference between View new posts and View active topics?

I've seen this in several forums, not only this. Also it seems to me that there is no big difference in terms of the list of topics.

Thanks

Hhm, I'm not sure. It seems that View New Posts shows only those topics where there is a new message since the last time you looked at the topic. For me, at the moment, there are only 6 or 8 topics listed. That's probably because I look at almost every message (while trolling for spam). If you only look at a few topics every time you visit, then it makes sense that there would be many new messages waiting for you. On the other hand, when I look at View Active Topics, that list is 3 pages of topics. I guess a topic is considered active if the last message posted to it is less than some set number of days old.

What I can't understand, is why View Unread Posts has 40 pages of topics, when I do at least open almost every new message, even if I might not read it closely.

I do use Unanswered Post and Active Topics list, in the sections on the right side of the Index page, every day. But Unread and New Post, I don't use at all. Maybe all 4 of them are just there for people to have a choice about how they manage their forum reading?

Hi. Thanks Brynn. That makes sense.

If that's right it mean New posts is dependent of user interaction in the forum while Active topics is not dependent of how and when the user is active in this forum :)

[edit]
No, it doesn't make sense. The number of topics under New posts should then have being greater.

I agree that it appears that some lists depend on user activity in forum, while others don't.

When you look at New Posts, is it a very long list of topics? Maybe it has nothing to do with user activity. Maybe it only shows posts made today? I thought since you said the New Posts looks like Active Posts, that you must be seeing a 3 page list, like I see in Active topics. That's how I came to my theory. But my theory doesn't explain the 40 page list of Unread Posts. Maybe there is a clue in the wording. 3 of the lists are about Posts, while the last one is about Topics.

Let me see if I can find a guide for the forum, or faq, or something.

Edit
Ok, there is an FAQ link, near top, right corner of page, beside Members and Logout. But I dont' see any info about those lists of posts and topics. Maybe we can find something at the website for phpBB forum software? I'll look around for something...

Edit 2
Ok, I found the Support section for this product: http://www.phpbb.com/support/ I don't have time to search it right now, but I can look later. I'm thinking their forum might have some info about it.

"New Posts" is essentially a subset of "Active Topics". "New Posts" are limited to topics that have new posts since your last visit whilst "Active Topics" show 1000 topics ordered by the date of the last post. Both lists will begin the same, but "Active Topics" extends beyond the date of your last visit.

As you can see of my screenshot, there is some more today.

Attachments are only allowed in a couple of subforums :( But it's really better to use an outside host for screenshots or images (on this forum). Apparently there's a limited space for attachments, and when that limit is reached, older attachments will be deleted, to make room for new ones. So I avoid using attachments for screenshots or images, and only use it for sharing SVG files.
