Small caps in text

How do I get small caps in text?

I'm using open type fonts in Linux, Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon with Inkscape 0.45.1. In other applications I can see the small caps working correctly with the fonts. I've tried putting the text in all caps and then scaling letters to different point sizes, but the result has very uneven ink weight and is not usable (I need the real small caps from the font). I'm designing a book cover, it's working really well so far except for this small issue. Any tips are appreciated.

I updated to 0.46 that has Effects->Text, but it doesn't have small caps.

Hi nwhitehe.

Small caps actually depends on the font itself. Some fonts simply are not designed with proper small caps.

What are some examples of fonts that have small caps that are usable by inkscape? I've tried several different fonts without success in 0.46.

Your supposed to be allowed to change with the xml editor the style properties for the font from font-variant normal to font-variant small caps, but inkscape refuses to accept that change.

To see what I mean type some text and then save and close the document. With a text editor open the file and edit the font-variant from normal to small-capsand then save the file. View in a browser view in firefox or opera and you will see a small cap font. But open the file back up in inkscape and you will have a different font.

Sorry about the bad info nwhitehe. It appears small caps do not work properly within Inkscape. I guess the small cap effect has to be done manually...

Thanks for the info. That explains some other things, too. For example I tried saving bits of text in other applications with small caps as SVG files, then opening them in inkscape, but it didn't work. That's probably the same as editing the XML.

The quick fix I'm using is to choose a font that has a separate small caps ttf file. Not my first choice of font, but it works.
