spell checker?

Postby brynn » Wed Jul 04, 2012 2:03 pm

Hi microUgly and Friends,
It seems that we suddenly have spell checking in the message editor Image But I don't see any way to disable it, in my Control Panel. Can it be disabled?

Thanks for your help :D

PS -- Well now I don't see it anymore. Maybe it's just in the Help subforum??? Hhmmm.....well yes, I'm wide awake  I know I saw it!

Edit
Ok, that was really, really weird. The editor was highlighting misspelled words with the red wiggly lines. I'm looking everywhere I can think. You know, like maybe I accidentally clicked a button. But I surely cannot find how it happened :?

That's your web browser, not the forum :D

Most modern browsers have a spell checker, and I'm sure they all allow you to disable it if you don't like it.

Oh it was the weirdest thing. Well first, I don't have any spell checking enabled, because I don't like it (find it annoying). It just showed up when I was 3/4 finished typing a message. After I posted the message, I spent 10 or 15 minutes looking for a new forum feature, or a button that I might have accidentally clicked. After finding nothing, I posted this topic, where I did not see any spell checking. That made me think maybe you had set up spell checking only in certain subforums.

Since then I've been back to the topic where I first saw it, tried editing that same message; typed several more replies; tried everything. I haven't seen it happen since!

Unless there's some key combination that I didn't know I used, perhaps enabled it. But if that's the case, I don't know how I inadvertently disabled it. I'll have to look up key shorcuts for Firefox. Ooooorrrr.....I would find it really strange if there were a spell check related to my system, that's actived by a key shortcut.....but I guess there could be.

Well, you know I love a good mystery, lol!

Anyway, thanks micro :D

If you're running Firefox, you can enter "about:config" in the location bar to get access to all the user's preferences. Click the "I'll be careful, I promise" box and then enter "spell" in the Search box. I'm not sure what they do but you now have the names to search Mozilla's site for. Enjoy hunting. :)

Well I've solved part of the problem. I did find a list of key shortcuts for Ff, but it turns out not to be a key shortcut. My right-click menu, in Firefox (and not in IE) offers an option called "Check Spelling"! :o Who knew?!! But that option is only there if the mouse pointer is in a text field. I use that right-click so seldom because I've gotten into the habit of using Ctrl + C or V, etc. for copy/paste, etc. In IE, all there is usually, is cut, copy, paste and delete. I've only been using Firefox for a year or 2, and never really paid attention to the right-click menu, since I use it so infrequently.

So how did I manage to click it, you ask? I actually have very poor mouse dexterity, and am not surprised at all, that I clicked it accidentally, Actually I probably right-clicked on purpose, but didn't intend to choose that option. Probably my finger slipped when I was trying to right-click outside the text field. Then I probably had to click again to get rid of that menu, but clicked Check Spelling instead

At this moment, I have it narrowed to Firefox, but I'm still trying to learn if it's related to some add-on, plug-in or extension. Does anyone else who uses Firefox have such an option? Maybe all Ff users have it?? I actually have a topic in the FF forums, but it can't hurt to ask here. I don't think any potentially conflicting info would be a problem, in this case (although usually I wouldn't post topics in more than one forum).

Anyway, mystery partly solved :D
