I think I stumbled onto the solution.
[Esc] key seems to allow the user to try again.
So if you get no reaction, press [Esc] and try again.  :bow1:

How to remove the fill:

1.  Select object
2.  Object menu > Fill and Stroke > Fill tab, then click big X button   :rem:

Or a shortcut:  Look in bottom, left corner of Inkscape window.  At the far left end of the palette, is a square with and X in it.  Click that while the object is selected, and the fill will be removed.

(Awesome road map so far........!!!)
I am totally a newbie, so I am hanging on every jot, and tittle......LOL
I can't find how to change my fill to "none" there are other options.....!!!!
