Title: This Inkscape 0.91 created SVG wouldn't render in Firefox 47.0 Xubuntu 16.04
Post by: Feanor on June 29, 2016, 03:30:43 AM
So I want to try to do some web development with SVG, so I tried to open this SVG file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3Z3SPhPdVFNQzJ1T1dONGJaU2s/view?usp=sharing in Firefox, making sure that I convert all flowed text into normal text.
This is what it should like: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3Z3SPhPdVFNSDhIX3JIdW9kbnM
This is what it looks like in Firefox: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3Z3SPhPdVFNLTg1WnExLU9SYzg

However, the same SVG file renders in Ristretto image viewer with no problem. So, is it my fault, Inkscape fault or Firefox fault? And how do I fix this SVG so it can render everywhere?

Welcome to Inkscape Community!

As you are learning, SVG support can vary quite a bit, depending on which viewer or which program you're using to display it.  While the SVG you provided does have some flowed text in it, we should at least be able to see the other parts of the image in Firefox.  I noticed though that you simply used Firefox to open the SVG.  So it's not uploaded to the internet.  It looks like it's just displayed on your system.  So I don't know if there might be something about your system that's blocking the display?

Here, I'll upload an SVG in an attachment, and you can tell me if you see it using Firefox.  Oh!  Better yet, I'll upload yours.  But be sure and tell me if you don't want it to stay visible.  I'll be glad to delete it there's a copyright issue, or you just don't want it displayed.

Besides having flowed text, it looks like some of your text is still text.  So since I don't have the font you used, installed on my system, my system has chosen the closest font I have to it.  So if you want everyone to view it the same way, you'll need to convert all the text to paths.

Edit -- Hhmm, it's not displayed here either....  I'm not sure why, but I'm investigating....

Ah-HA!!

Took me long enough, lol.  And I didn't think this should matter.  But I noticed you had one layer's Blend Mode set to Darken, and the other set to Lighten.  When I switched them both to Normal, the image showed up!

I don't know if it works like this, but I wonder if Lighten and Darken kind of cancel each other out.  Now I'm going to have to test the layer blend modes (just for my own curiosity).  I'll do it in the Testing board, but I'll link it to here, after I finish.

At the moment, it looks like using any Layer Blend Mode blocks that layer from view.  Although maybe this is just happening with Firefox?  I'll dig up IE in a minute, and test with it.  Meanwhile, here's the link to my tests:  http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=375.0

It is a "rendering problem" of browsers that you could avoid by using normal blending mode only.
(Problem is related to transformations.)

So, I remove all of the layers blend options (I have no idea why they are set in the first place) and convert all text to paths, as I'm using a non-standard font with PUA unicode text

Does it work for all of you? At least it works in my firefox now, with [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] here, in this forum...

Now, is there a tool that can somehow verify Inkscape created svg file and warn me of possibly incompatible settings or remove it so it can render in most SVG viewer?

You should be allowed to view attachments.  Could you show me a screenshot of that error message?  I've checked all the settings, and you should be able to see them.  Even if you weren't logged in, you should still see them.  But a screenshot will help me track down where the problem is.  Also, in case it's only SVG attachments, I've attached PNG below.  Can you see it?

Because, as we've discussed, SVG support can vary quite a lot, Inkscape would not be able to guess which features are or aren't supported, in whatever place where you will be using your SVG file.  So no, there's no such setting that can do that.

While more and more browsers are gaining more and more support for SVG, still the best advice is to use images in raster formats, for display on the internet, if you want everyone to be able to see it.  Of course in certain situations, especially like for an interactive page or image, or other unique SVG features, you'd want to use SVG.  But for something that you want to always be showing, raster should be used.

PS - Very nice drawing, by the way!  Very professional look  :)

Edit -- Oh, do you mean in the message Preview?  Yes, it does show that in the Preview, and I don't know why.  But when you look at  your message after it's posted, you can see the attachment there, right?

Yes, I mean that I cannot see it in the preview, but as a normal user and unregistered user I can see it just fine. And I make this for my laptop wallpaper, so thanks

Very professional look

Wouldn't agree on that, but who am I to judge.

Off-Topic: show

Negative lettering are harder to read, using strokes around a logotype is better avoided.
Objects&strokes are not converted to paths, ellipse is just an arc, there is a cut at the right side
inner path's stroke ends/miters are sticking out,
design is not symmetric, no vertical/horizontal axises aligned, no rotation center aligned etc.
Not to mention that the page size is in fractions of pixels, there will be problems exporting it/rendering on screen, edges will get anti-aliased.
Will black work for your eyes as a wallpaper? Isn't that too much contrast?

Hiding it behind offtopic not because it is offtopic but because noone asked for critique.

I agree with that, there is some serious bugs with this design, especially that real broken octagon thingy, and because this thread is about tech support not art support that is offtopic to this thread, so where can I ask for critique?

It's fine here as well I guess if you like.
(Made it offtopic because my experience was noone likes when the flaws are pointed out that much.)

Yes, you're absolutely welcome to discuss artistic style.  I'm certainly no expert, but the design looks good to me.

(If this forum was going to remain, I might start a new board for that.  But maybe we can put a new board for the new official forum, which is still under development, more or less.)
