Greetings Everyone;
I installed the most recent version of Inkscape (0.92.4) to my system (WIN 10 Pro, 64 bit). A couple of curious things occurred.
When I first open Inkscape I get the following message which you can see in the first attachement..Inksacpe_OpeningMessage.jpg
*Inksacpe_OpeningMessage.jpg
(24.33 kB . 528x203)
(viewed 206 times)

I only include this since I have never seen this error crop up before, so it may or may not be pertinent.

Inkscape otherwise opens fine, but when I go to import an image, this is what I get...ImageImport_Refusal.jpg
*ImageImport_Refusal.jpg
(168.89 kB . 1920x1080)
(viewed 217 times)

:hmm: Admittedly, I am confused, it's never done this before for any reason. I dutifully checked permissions on my image folders, but there was nothing to indicate that they couldn't be opened up by software (No problems with Krita, Gimp, etc.)

Welcome to the forum!

Hhmm, that is not good news.....  When you installed Inkscape, did you let it install where it wanted to, or did you change the location?  Do you remember whether you asked Inkscape to keep your old preferences file?  I seem to recall there's an option not to keep it.

Would you browse to the location in that error message?  By the wording of that message, it sounds like Inkscape found your prefs file, but couldn't read it.  I would hope that Inkscape kept the old file (by re-naming it) rather than overwriting it.  Do you see 2 prefs files?  Or just one?

If there's just one prefs file there, I'm trying to think of some way to find out if it's the default prefs file.  I guess it would be....

This is very strange, and I've never heard of it before!  My best guess, from experience with Inkscape, and providing support, that error message means something else, and is just worded badly.  But we should try and chase it down anyway.  We might have to bump this up to developers, if we humble users can't sort it out.

By chance, do you still have your previous version installed?

Can you tell us specifically which file you installed?  Help menu > About Inkscape, and copy the version number and all the numbers to the right.  Or if you have the link to the file you downloaded, that would be fine too.

Just to confirm this, you were able to import images from this same folder (which produced the 2nd error message) using your older version of Inkscape.  Right?

I haven't installed 0.92.4 yet, but after I find out exactly which package, and which settings you used, I'll install using your info, and try to reproduce these errors.  Although, I'm on Windows 7, so it won't be exactly the same conditions.

One more thought on the import error.  Close Inkscape (all instances) then when you open it, right-click on either the file or the desktop icon, and choose Run as Admin.  Then try the import again.

Thanks so much for getting back to me.

I installed Inkscape 0.92.4 (5da689c313, 2019-01-14)

Well, I read through your original reply, and began the process of tracking down the information you asked for.
For the record, I've gotten into the habit of uninstalling old versions of the software whenever there is a new, updated version. I probably don't have to do that for Inkscape, but its just habit at this point.

Also for the record, I use the IObit suite of programs to keep my computer in tippy-top shape, so I ran Advanced System Care first and then re-booted. I don't think that had any direct correlation to the original problem, but one can never know.

So anyway. Before I did anything, I decided to reboot. And....everything is fine? :uhoh:

Not sure what that was about. Once my machine rebooted, I started Inkscape. No startup error message.

Promptly went to import image, and there they were, as if nothing ever happened. Very twighlight zone. The image I selected imported nicely and all was well. :???:

If you like, I can still go down the list of things you asked for, But unless the program does anything hinky again I think I'm good.

Could it have been that I simply needed to restart?

Anyway, thanks again. If anything else happens, I'll jump back on this thread. Be well. :bow1:

Oh, I always like to hear good news!

Restarting the computer is not supposed to be required for installing Inkscape.  But I've also had such an experience.  I don't remember what the problem was after I installed it, but restarting the computer fixed it.

Happy drawing!
