Title: opinions on "logo" with slogan
Post by: brynn on August 19, 2018, 04:15:16 PM
Hi Friends,
I'm thinking of adding sort of a slogan to the forum logo - mostly I'm hoping to give visitors the idea that they won't find developers here.  But it would also emphasize the community concept.

(Note - I use "logo" because that's what the forum software calls whatever you decide to put in that place.  But I know that technically it's not really a logo, by definition.)

But I can't decide which font to use for it, so I thought I'd ask for opinions.  I really could go with any of them, but if there aren't any strong opinions, I'm leaning between #1 and #4.

The first 2 are the same font as the logo, except the italic version.  And they are treated the same way, to give a bit of 3d or depth effect.  The 2nd one is actually the true font, and the first one it's just stretched horizontally a little.

The last 3 don't have any 3d or depth effect, they're just the flat text.

Hhmm, I guess I'll probably center the Inkscape logo vertically to both lines, while right now, it's centered on the top line.  Let's see if that helps me make a decision....

Moved Inkscape logo slightly:

Had an idea to see if I could make the text look shiny, kind of like the Inkscape logo.  Doesn't look shiny, but here's that effort.  Just playing, nothing definite.  New on top, original below.

How would it look if you used the script-like text and moved it a bit to the right? I think that centering doesn't work so well.

In my humble opinion it doesn't have a professional impact at all -tagline or not.
Logotype should work in monochrome and preferred to be monochrome. Outlines are better be avoided in general on any lettering as it obscures the "word image".

The mixed small case and capitals doesn't help either.

Thanks for your comments, Lazur.  I was thinking of moving the slogan over  to the side.  In fact, that was my first instinct.  But didn't like it.

However, it will probably seem different when it's loaded onto the page.  I might end up moving it over under "Community", in the end.  Maybe it's too big - maybe making it smaller?

No, I'm not trying to make a real logo.  I just need the name of the site up there.  It's the forum software that calls it a logo.  No matter what you put there, a photo, or even nothing, it would still call it a logo.

The mixed upper/lower case is just that particular font.  I couldn't tell you how many different fonts I tried.  That was really the only one I liked.  But I'd certainly take suggestions, if anyone has any.

I think it would be fun to have the text, and add some of the Inkscape icons to it.  But I'm not artistic enough to make it work.  But if someone else wants to try, I would love to see it.  I'd certainly consider using it.  (Although keeping in mind that things might be changing around here, if the new forum ever happens.)

+1 for the more legible one -which is at the bottom.

Thanks, I was thinking that too.  I've been searching for another font, which would be closer to hand printing, but less scripty - sort of in between the 2.  Haven't found one yet but still looking.

I think the 2nd script version in this attachment is better.  What do you think?

Still not sure if right side or middle is better placement.
