Title: Best SVG to Illustrator converters...
Post by: ALEXMIAMI305 on May 29, 2018, 08:15:06 AM
Hi everyone.

I am wondering if anyone uses an awesome free SVG to Illustrator online...

I have a copy of Illustrator CS2 that I got for free like everyone else. LOL I have tried to save the Inkscape (0.92.3) SVG then open it with Adobe Illustrator so that I can then save it as an AI and when I open it, it is all jacked up...

So then I tried finding an online converter and tried online-converting.com and also convertio.co and they did convert them but when I tried opening what was converted with Inkscape, it gave me an error "failed to load the requested file..." I know some people, clients, places only want AI extensions on their files. I am have tried it on my Windows 7 Laptop and my Windows 10.

Any help, advice, etc. would appreciated. Thanks.

File > Save a Copy... > select file type: pdf.

And then rename to .ai, or open with Illustrator and save as .ai. This will convert any filters to raster representations, though.

Welcome to the forum!

You could try saving as Plain SVG in Inkscape, instead of Inkscape SVG.  I don't know if that would help, but can't hurt to try.

Thanks for the welcome!

OK so Moini I tried what you suggested and it did not open in my Adobe Illustrator....the file looked blank. It was so weird. It did save as a PDF and it did save as an AI by changing the file extension. I did get to open both the AI and PDF in Inkscape and they were visible, I just could not confirm it on Adobe Illustrator but the   AI file extension did take. Thanks.

Also, thanks brynn...btw, what is the difference between plain SVG and Inkscape SVG?

Here's an FAQ item which explains that:  https://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/#what-inkscape-svg-opposed-plain-svg

To be honest, it might not help you at all.  But it would be easy to try.  If you're worried, you could make a copy of your file, to save as Plain SVG.  I guess you probably want to keep a backup anyway though.

There must be something in your pdf that Illustrator doesn't understand, then... Which is enormously weird. Can you share a small example file?
