Title: How can I make :ct: calligraphy tool draw crescent shapes

I want to draw shapes like the ones in box 1 but I always end up getting the ones in box 2.  I've looked around the web but I couldn't find what I was looking for can you guys please help me

Use the pencil tool, with Shape > Ellipse (or another one of your choice) OR draw the path, then apply a PowerStroke Live Path Effect to it, then adjust the path width manually.
