Title: Inkscape 64-bit for Mac OSX (urgent)
Post by: Merman on December 10, 2018, 04:07:11 AM
The current version of Inkscape for Mac OSX does not support 64-bit, regardless of what the info on the download page states. The current version of Mac OSX, Mojave is the last version that supports 32-bit apps. So that means that in September 2019, when the follow-up to Mojave will be available, the current version of Inkscape (0.92.2) can no longer be used by people with a Mac who want to stay updated.

Is anyone working on a new version of Inkscape for Mac? I prefer not to use HomeBrewer or MacPorts, since that is way too technical for me.

First I should say I'm not a Mac user, so there might be something that I don't understand.  But as far as I know, anyone can use a 32 bit program on a 64 bit system.

I can also say that the Inkscape project has lately been having trouble finding people to package Inkscape for Macs.  You must realize that we don't even have the current stable version (0.92.3) for Macs.  Only 0.92.2.

Moini can probably say more than I can, about this.

There's a group of people discussing mac related issues at https://chat.inkscape.org/channel/mac-dev - best to post a message there to get their attention.

Its almost june 2019 and this is still an issue :( does this mean you will no longer be able to use inkscape on a mac in a few weeks time. I am becoming desperate now! :(

Please tell us where you're hearing this rumor!  I've never heard of such a thing, that in a few weeks, Inkscape won't work on Macs!  For goodness sakes!

If Macs are no longer going to run on 32 bit machines, I don't know what you think the Inkscape community can do about that?

After some research, I think I might have found a little info about this.  As far as I can tell (and I can't tell very much) the issue about "being official".  As far as I can tell, Inkscape is still going to work, it just doesn't have the official blessing of Mac (or Apple, or whoever it is).  Here's the bug report:

https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/issues/84

Also, it looks like the beta version of 1.0 will be ready by the time whatever this is, will happen.  That version won't have this "unsigned" issue.

It will have the 'unsigned' issue. Just not the 32bit issue.

It's true - Apple has announced that it is ending support for 32-bit apps in future operating systems (macOS Catalina and above) starting this fall. Check out these links:

Hopefully a 64-bit version for the Mac is released soon.

What I meant to say is that the situation sounds more like "Macs won't be able to run Inkscape anymore", rather than "Inkscape will break".  As mentioned above, there will be a Mac version of Inkscape that fixes it.

I just looked at the bug report again, and of course I can't understand much of it.  But I noticed the Due Date has passed.  That might mean that there is an alpha version for it already - with a huge emphasis on MIGHT.

I don't know if I can find the Mac versions, but let's see....  Ok, try this:  https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0alpha2/mac-os-x/dl/

(In case someone doesn't know, alpha is less stable than beta, and this is an alpha version.)
