I'm fairly new to inkscape but I've gotten a pretty good handle on it so far. I've followed many a tutorial and have a good idea of the different operations available but I've run into an issue with spirals. So for example, I've created a rectangle and a spiral on top of one another. (pic 1)What I'd like to do is limit the spiral to the confines of the shape (in this case a rectangle) so I thought using path/Intersection would be the way to go. It gave me the result I was looking for save one thing, a line that was not visible in the original spiral but came to light in the intersected result. (pic 2) I realize that this line that appeared (highlighted in pic 3) is necessary to create the spiral but is there anyway I can get the same result without having the radius line show up?

The boolean operations result in closed paths.
You could convert the stroke of the spiral to a path before the intersection (Ctrl+Alt+C), although I have doubts you are after for that effect.
Instead, try grouping the spiral (Ctrl+G),
clone the square (Alt+D),
select both the group and the clone and set clipping.
This way you can alter the shape of the rendered area,
add more objects to be rendered inside the area and edit the spiral shape.

Path -> Cut Path would have been another option (in case you want to engrave/plot the spiral).
It does not close the path, but cuts it into pieces. You would have needed to remove the superfluous pieces after the operation.

Well, I'm a little late to the discussion, but I would still use the same technique (Intersection) and just delete the extra segment afterwards. Much faster than grouping and cloning and clipping, and all that.
Click on the segment once (highlights the 2 nodes), then click "Delete segment between 2 nodes" button on the control bar. Done!
