Title: Transferring Fonts from 0.91 to 0.92.2
Post by: polite2u on February 26, 2018, 11:42:18 AM
Hi, I'm not new to Inkscape but I'm having a hard time getting the fonts that were in 0.91 to show up in 0.92.2.  I also got a new computer to ad insult to injury.  The fonts that showed up on my old computer with 0.91 is not showing up on my new computer with 0.92.2.  I have read every post and have tried to copy fonts from folder to folder, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled Inkscape to no avail.  I don't want to have to use my old computer to work on older files just because of a font.  I'm a bit frustrated so hopefully you understand my dilemma.  Am thanking everyone in advance for the help that is forthcoming! :hh:

Hi polite2u,

I assume this is a matter of your Windows installation, not Inkscape. If you did not change the installation path on your old computer, your fonts will be located at c:\windows\fonts. This is a (very) hidden folder but once you are in it you can copy the fonts like files to an usb stick or network share. You may need to work from a dos box or use a better file manager like TotalCommander. Just copy and paste the path c:\windows\fonts to the address bar as you would not be able to see the folder in the first place. From there you will be able to install the missing fonts on your new computer easily.

thanks for your response.  I do know where my Fonts folder is located and actually looked in it for these particular fonts and they are not located there.  I found some fonts in the Inkscape folder but again, the ones I was looking for are not there.  Still at a loss.

Welcome to the forum (both of you)!

You may need to take an extra step to install some of the fonts, which don't copy over.  For the fonts which did not install when you tried to copy/paste, try this. Copy/paste the missing fonts, but do not paste into the fonts directory.  I use the Documents library for saving font files.  Open the font file (double-click).  That will produce a small window with an Install button.  Just click that, and it will install the font.

Once all the fonts are actually installed, Inskcape will show them.

Actually it was the new computer, rather than the new Inkscape version, which is the culprit here.  You simply don't have all the fonts installed on the new computer, which you had installed on the old one.  But as I said, once you have the fonts actually installed, Inkscape can use them.

Before I wrote the post, I searched for all fonts on my old computer, copied and pasted into the new.  When I got version 0.91, new fonts appeared in that software that do not appear anywhere else, in any other software I have, which lead me to believe they came from that update.  I have already done what you suggested and they still do not appear .... soooo, looks like I'm stuck like Chuck trying to find out where these mystery fonts are on my system.  Thanks for trying to help.

No, Inkscape does not supply any fonts.  It does not have any fonts in the entire program.  It can only use fonts which are installed on the computer where Inkscape is installed.

If you have fonts properly installed, Inkscape will find them.  If they are simply on your computer (downloaded or pasted), Inkscape can't find them.  They must be installed on the computer.

Are you using a font manager, by any chance?  I mean something besides C/Windows/fonts?

And you can't find them in the main font folder either, right?

Yeah, someone else was having that problem.  Sorry, I didn't understand that was the problem before.  I think they installed....I think it was a certain file manager which shows where hidden fonts are.  I think it was the one which inetuka mentioned, Total Commander.  Or it was something Commander.  I'm pretty sure it's free.

The other person was successful finding the lost fonts with that program.

Or else, since you know the name of the fonts, you can just search them out on the internet, and download them on the new computer, and install.
