Summary: A comparison between raster and vector formats.

Which one can suit your needs?

If you want to edit objects separately,
or, draw in a style where every shape, drawing element can be distinguished easily,
edit them to the core with no restriction, then use vectors.

Also if you want to scale things up into many different sizes.

For images showing complex colour transitions,
depicting infinite details like fractals,
editing a photograph or a scanned image,
the raster format can suit better.

(Originally it was on inkscape's to-do list,
with the request also present here.)
