Hello, I downloaded Inkscape about a month ago and it has been working great, I am enjoying it a lot. But last week while working on a project the program started freezing. I've tried doing a little bit of other  projects and they run fine for the short times I've worked on them as tests; but everytime I try to work on that specific one it freezes. Does anyone know the cause or can anyone help? I've already uninstalled and reinstalled the software and still have the problem. I'm usimg Windows 10, and Inkscape 0.91, 64 bitt, and my laptop has pretty good ram with nothing on it except software; I only save things to external devices.

I'm trusting you all with a copy of the file bellow.

P.s. I know nothing about programing.

 Thanks for the help.

Hi.

Probably that is caused by the blurring.
If you want to work on the details, switch the rendering mode to no filters (Ctrl+5 on the numpad).
Blurring and zooming in is a no-go, although that is the only part where inkscape uses the gpu.

In my humble opinion that image is not improved much by any blurring and maybe those filters could be dropped entirely.

On a side note filters are rendered live only in svg-s, meaning you can see them responding to the zoom level in inkscape and browsers only.
But the latter may not display them right at all, using a different renderer and usually that they don't display transformed filters.
What I'm trying to say is that if you want to print it, you will need to save it as a pdf, where all filters are represented by bitmap copies with a preset resolution.

Ok THanks, I'll try turning them off and see if it will let me work on them.

Welcome to Inkscape Community!

The file isn't particularly large.  And if you have 4gb RAM or more, it shouldn't be a problem.

What are you trying to do at the moment it freezes?  Hhmm, yes, I see.  When I select all, and try to drag, I do get a delay (me with 4gb ram).  But it resolves in....I'd say about 10 seconds.

You can see my reply to another current message here, with a similar problem:  http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=369.msg2628#msg2628

And for convenience, I'll also link to the same tutorial on performance issues:  Tips to Avoid Performance Issues

If you can tell us specifically what you're doing at the moment it freezes, we might be able to give you some more detailed tips (the tutorial really covers the basics, but in certain specific cases, there might be something else that could help).

It always happens when I'm about to work on the text; i try to move it, it freezes, unfreezes for a second then keeps freezing, never giving me enough time to do any work. Yesterday the first thing i did was delete one of the barrels and that seamed to help, i didnt work on it long but i was able to work on it some. But then i was called away and wasnt able to see if it was going to freeze again.

I'm having similar problems too, with your text, but I don't understand why.  Still investigating, but maybe there's something that's almost corrupt about the file.  It takes a much longer time opening than it should.  Anyway, still investigating  :)

Ok, I think I found at least some of the problems.  First, there are all kinds of different and nested groups, so it makes it hard to select what you need.  That doesn't contribute to the file size or performance issues, but it just makes it hard to select.

I think the main problem with the text, is the drawing of the barrel/tap inside the "O".  After a few rounds of ungrouping, at a certain point I've found 93 filtered objects.  And after some more ungrouping, I found another group of 85  That means you either duplicated an object with a filter many times, or added the filter individualy to many.  There also are 6 or 8 circles with various shading, blurring, gradients on top of the whole thing, which wouldn't be needed for the tiny  "O".  Unless this is going to be on something like a billboard, that much detail can't be seen at all.  Our human eyes just can see it.

But whether it's going to be the size you have it at 100% zoom, or on a sign or billboard, it would probably help if you grouped all those tiny pieces, and added the blur (gaussian filter) to them all at once.

I don't know if this is what happened in this case, but I wonder.  As I've been learning Inkscape, and I enjoy trying to create realism or photorealism, I'm always getting tripped up with this.  I'll zoom in, and draw in all kinds of wonderful and fantastic and amazing details.  But when I zoom back out, it looks awful.  I couldn't tell you how much time I've wasted trying to learn that lesson!  And it still happens sometimes.  It really is a skill, to be able to depict detail in a very small drawing, without actually using a lot of detail.  I think it's an artistic skill, and I'm still trying to learn  :)

Oh!  I don't know if this will help in your work, but View menu > Icon Preview will show you your drawing or selection at a few different icon sizes.  It's just more convenient that zooming around so much, if you're making something the size of an icon.

Well anyway, I hope that helps.  Let us know how it goes  :)

Yea that helped, I deleted the barrel inside the text and its running better, and now that I think of it a few things were accidentally duplicated.
And I have been having problems selecting certatin items in the graphic, specifically the group of lines that make the planks within the inner circle.
Thank you so much for all the work you've been doing to help!!!

You're welcome -- happy to help  :)

Here's the best tip you'll ever get for learning how to use Inkscape.  The status bar is that bar across the bottom of the window.  The middle section of it  will give you all kinds of info, while you work.  If you have the Selection tool enabled, the status bar will tell you what kind of object it is -- Path, Group, Rectangle, Clone, etc., etc.

In a complex drawing, like for example, all those several circles with transparency, blur and gradient, that are all on top of the barrel, that can be amazingly helpful.  If you're looking for the one with the gradient, you can look at the left side of the status bar to see the fill and stroke and opacity of the object that's selected.  So while you're going Alt + click, on top of the barrel, you'll select one of those circles after the other, going down through the stack....well, assuming they aren't grouped.  If they're grouped, you would need to use Ctrl + Alt + click.  And you can watch the left side of the status bar while you do it, and when you get to the object with the gradient, you''ll know you have the right circle selected.

If you have some other tool enabled, the status bar will give you different kind of info.  Oh, and pretty soon....I'm not sure if in the next version coming out or not.  But soon, Inkscape will have an object manager type of dialog, so that you don't have to remember which object has which kind of fill.  You can find it in the list and click to select it.  That will be awesome!  Actually, I think you can use if you want to install the development version.  I'm not positive, but I'm pretty s ure.

Well anyway, have fun  :)
