Hello,
I'm brand new to Inkscape and all this week I have been trying to fumble through trying to learn this program while making a logo for a client. My FIRST client. I feel like this problem shouldn't be so big for me, but I can't seem to find a solution anywhere.
The problem: I have 2 vertices/nodes and I want to connect them so that I can make a clean corner. They are the highlighted ones in the attached image.
What I've tried: I have tried Join Nodes, union, combine. I've tried breaking them apart, grouping them, object to path, stoke to path and then join nodes again. I'm at a loss for what else to try as this program doesn't work anything like any other art program I've used before.

Did you try join nodes with a new segment, that ought to work.

From the look of your screenshot, they should join without any problem. The Join Selected Nodes button on the control bar looks like this :jsn: Or there's a key shortcut for it. They appear to be selected and ready to join, in the screenshot.
If that doesn't work, my first guess for what could be preventing it, is that there is more than one node on top of each other, such that you're trying to join a non-endnode, for at least one of the paths.
To do more than guess, we'd have to be able to see the SVG file.
Unfortunately (and for me it's always surprising) we often hear from people who have taken a job to do something that they either don't already know how to do, or don't know much about.
Inkscape is not just an art program. It's very sophisticated and complex vector graphics editor. It does so much more than art!
