I've just installed Inkscape on my laptop and when I double click on the icon nothing happens. If I open the task manager, it shows that Inkscape is running, however it's not visible on my desktop and the icon doesn't appear in my task bar with my other open applications. I verified that I downloaded the correct file, 64-bit and that my laptop is a 64-bit system.
Any thoughts would be helpful!

Welcome to the forum!

Which version did you install,  0.91?  Did you use MSI, EXE or 7Z?  Did you have Inkscape before this?  If you did, and you used MSI or EXE, did you uninstall the old version, before installing the new one?

Hhmm....  Do you still have the problem after restarting the computer?  Do you find the Task Manager shows Inkscape is running, before you try to open it?  Or does it only show that it is running after you try to open, but you still don't have the window?

The first time you open Inkscape after installing it, it takes longer than you might expect, to open.  If you have a lot of fonts installed, it might take a full minute or 2 for the fonts to load.  But after the first time, it loads much faster.

Have you waited, but it still doesn't show?

Oh!  I notice you were using Windows when you posted your first message, but Linux for the last message.  Which one are you installing Inkscape on?

Well, if you used MSI, that must mean you're installing on Windows, right?  So give it a few minutes for Inkscape to open for the first time.  And tell us if it ever did open or not  :)

edit
Also note that Inkscape runs faster and opens faster on Linux, than on Windows.  At least that's the conventional wisdom.

I'm not sure if it runs faster, but there are less bugs (due to developers finding them more easily, and being able to fix them more easily), and you can configure a Linux system to use less resources than Windows, so it's possible that you have more resources left for the programs you're running (e.g. Inkscape).

Wow!  That's the longest I've heard.  But it's good to know, for helping other users.  You must have a lot of fonts installed?  At least that's what we've identified as the main factor.

Well, I'm glad you got it running  :)  In the future, it will start much faster than that.

Have fun!
