Hi, I'm new to inkscape and I'm trying to create an engraved text on a black background. Can someone please help me???
-
Hi.
Can you show an example of the effect you want to achieve?
Engraved can mean alot of things especially if you can't use the same jargon as the "olds".

Hi Lazur sorry,
I'm trying to achieve the engrave look in the photo attached, where the text look like it's etched into the background. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

You can try some filtering for that look.
Like, the built in dark emboss filter (http://www.littlewebhut.com/inkscape/graphics_filter_guide/bumps/) can give you decent results.
There is a huge list (http://www.littlewebhut.com/inkscape/graphics_filter_guide/) of ready-made filters and with the filter editor you can even make a custom one.
Which I wouldn't consider a good way to start with inkscape, the interface is not user friendly to say the least.
But if you want to explore that part, would suggest reading Xav's article on general filter editing basics here (http://fullcirclemagazine.org/issue-108/).
And then to read this (http://goinkscape.com/create-a-ketchup-effect-filter-in-inkscape/) tutorial.

Thank you! I will definitely play around with the filters.

Welcome Twanya!
Oh, I just wrote a couple of tutorials for this! But I still need to sort of polish them off. There are 2 tutorials -- 1 that makes it look like the text is raised, which I call "embossed", and the other makes it look like the text is below the surface, which I call "engraved" (like carved into a headstone). I don't actually know what the technical meaning of those words are, and I think they are often used interchangeably.
Anyway, your example looks to me more like embossed. To me, the text looks raised.
However, using a filter, as Lazur suggests, is the short path, to often great results. And if you can only find something that's close to what you want, show us, and explain what you want, and we can help you "tweak" the filter. It's not hard to do, but it's not necessarily obvious how to do it.
Well anyway, if you want to learn how to use Inkscape, I would suggest using my tutorials, which I'll finish off later today. But if you're just using Inkscape this one time, probably the filter will be easier.
Quiz time! Who knows where that logo comes from (without looking it up)? (the LOVE logo) I'm not sure if it's old enough for the copyright to be expired, but as long as this is for a personal use (non-commercial) I doubt there would be any problems.

It is a statue somewhere in the big apple.
Rage against the machine mocked it for their album cover on "Renegades" I know of but probably there are hundreds more copycats.
-
Didn't know about statue. I was thinking of the book and movie "Love Story" by Erich Segal.

I wrote a tutorial for a cutout effect. Its for Gimp but the principle is similar in Inkscape.
Instead of a layermask you use clipping.

In this thread you can find a mini tutorial on how to create an inner shadow manually, instead of using a filter:

Thank you Espermachine, I will take a look at it and Brynn I would definitely want to see the tutorials you did.

Ok, here are the 2 tutorials

You can also make 3D text with the Motion Extension.
