Title: hipster logos challenge
Post by: brynn on November 28, 2015, 01:03:27 AM
Hi Friends,
I guess we'll try another round of challenges and contests.  Espermachine suggested a hipster logos challenge.

Here's a quote from a discussion at IF, about what "hipster" means:
Quote
It has become pretty stereotype. Its a minimalistic retro (50ies i think) style, mostly b/w, yes.
Like this:
https://d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net/i ... 1414176272

https://www.youtube.com/user/Tronix101design/videos

Another idea is to make something with chains.
This tutorial show an interesting result:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08zqdw-L0i0
or this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UZTNMehg0Q

And a little more:
Quote
Cant tell you if its related to Jack Kerouac, but your cliche hipster would be a tatooed, bearded, skinny jeans and plaid shirted guy with an undercut and fifties frames. Maybe stretched earlobes. Etc.
Everything that has been considered hip in recent years.
This movement is basically over and hipster a dirty word.
But thats not the point.

This hipster style logo is all over the internet, is relatively easy to make and there are loads of templates. So thats why i thought it might be a good idea, to make a challenge around these type of logos.

There are tons of tutorial on youtube on how to do this style, and some of them are absolutely laughable when a professional designer needs 20 min to get two types of text on a path in Illustrator.

For me, when I think of "hip", I think of someone who says "groovy!", or a hippie.

By that description, we used to called those guys "greasers" (for their greased back hair, I guess).  But before that, I think they were called "beatniks".

Anyway, my DDG search turns up this:  https://duckduckgo.com/?q=hipster+logo&t=ffsb#  If the Images option isn't already showing, click it, to see a lot of examples.  Or I'm sure google images will have lot too.

Now I need to get some sleep.  But tomorrow I'll make some logos.  And let's see some others too!

What i posted at Inkscapeforum was a quick example. I will try to come up with something better, but in the meantime, im migrating the image over here.

Oh, I like how you treated the curves of the oval shape, on the first one!  That curved line on the top of "vector" and the bottom of "graphic" really accentuates the shape.  And then the white fill on the side.  It almost seems like it stretches....it creates motion or movement.

Although I haven't seen any examples with motion, in my search.  To me, it seems very static, and very plain.  As I'm just starting to work on my first one, I realize these will be fairly easy to do (although I tend to work much more slowly than most users  :uhoh:).  But there is room for some interesting parts with the non-text or decorative elements.

Perfect for newbies!!  (hint-hint-don't be shy-join us!!)

Lol, my first try with Wireframe Sphere extension, using whatever values were showing, I got this!!

Very interesting....but not quite what I expected -- better read up on whatever I can find about it.  :D

Edit
Actually, now I think might be a bug.  Sometimes I get  the expected wireframe sphere, and sometimes I don't.  Haven't figured out what's triggering it yet.

Edit #2
From the devs, yes a bug, looks to be fixed already, for next version  :)

Oh, nice Lazur!  But I've never heard of a lumberjack who didn't have a beard  :uhoh:

Mine not going so good.  I have such a hard time resisting to add more and more details.  Maybe I'll have a couple to show, later today.

@Lazur: lots of nice little details !

That dropshadow texture is the killerfeature. Makes a big difference !

Thank's!

The drop shadow was drawn with the wavy pattern fill, was focusing more on the labris shape.
Looks quite impressive on a necklace (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOOebk_dKFo) too (seen on the drummer).

On beards:

One of these "quick" ones, that are not as easily done as it looks "on paper".
Inspired by Lazur's video.

Clipping that triangle was quite a headache, so i did it by node editing instead.

I didn't even notice the wavy pattern/drop shadow.  Didn't click to get full size.  Just when I recover from a head cold last week, it seems I have another fever now :ssd:  Gotta go find web md or something....  But I promise to participate, when fever breaks.   :(

Hey, how did you make those radial rays?  They have a sort of perspective effect, where if you hide either the top half or bottom half of the image, it has a lot of depth to it.

But those radial rays are close together at the sides, and wider apart at top and bottom.  Was it made with everything symmetrical as a circle, and then you stretched it wider, but not taller?

Ok, well I've got a lame effort.  I'm not really very good with logos or info graphics kind of thing.  Maybe when I feel better.....   :-S  (will see doc tomorrow)  Maybe a little too big?

How was that a headache, it looks easy.

 :ot1:
The image seems similar to the inkmountain/inkscape's logo with that photograph.

(By the way dailysketch 23 was about black metal logotypes (https://openclipart.org/detail/219864/daily-sketch-23-black-metal-logotype).) :ot2:

Hey, how did you make those radial rays?

Super easy  :-D
Its a star with 106 points.
Logo started as a circle and looked awful in the early phases. So i stretched it into an ellipse because you liked that about my earlier post.

Learned the star trick from one of Nicks Logo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_1fXn0gaX4) tutorials.

Dont know why you think that, i love it !
The proportions could be perfected a little but thats always a delicate thing to get right.

I like especially the guillloche border !

That was my thought as well.
My first idea was to just clip it, but that also clips everything outside the ring.
If i mask it with a black circle that has a white stroke, only the parts that i wanted to clip are visible.

What works is drawing a rectangle that covers the triangle with a hole punched into it (the circlestroke), but that doesnt let me change the strokewidth (except by a Break apart).

So in the end i found it easier to just node edit the triangle, especially because cutting out a circular stroke of the triangle didnt always look best.
(Thats why i experiment with a polygon, etc.)

EDIT: just found out, you can also construct a complex mask by grouping several objects. That makes things slightly easier. But its not as elegant as clipping a group (and being able to later enter the group and tweak).

There are a couple of ways doing it.

If you involve cloning, it can be a live solution -haven't bothered with it yet in the attachment, it was a very quick one.

You have to admit all these solutions require a bit of thinking. It makes IS not exactly an easy program.

In Gimp i would just alpha select the ring, grow it, and apply a layermask from selection.

Also, why does the gradient solution look so aliased ?

I think i understand what you mean with cloning.
Is there a way to enter a group of objects used for masking ?

I agree with Brynn. Its hard to keep it minimalistic.  :beg:

Gradient looks aliased as there is no anti-aliasing on gradients -steps next to eachother brings out that "issue".
The whole anti-aliasing thing is just screen related, printers don't use anti-aliasing on ink blots.

Well for printing, using masking is not a good solution, has bad support for saving as pdf.

For masking with clones-
if you make a group, clone it, use the clone for masking, you can edit the parent group and edit the masking in "real time".
Grouping the parent group, you can even make it transparent with the masking still working.

Attachment may illustrate better.

Edit: thinking it over, cloning is not that necessary, always forgot that.
There is a node tool setting on the toolbar to display clipping/masking objects of selected paths
-works well on the previous attachment, except on the gradiented mask.

Yes its slightly asymmetric. I like it.

Did a variation. Tried to colorize it in IS, but that filter also colorizes the masks, lol (i guess thats bug).
So i did it in Gimp instead, plus the grunge of course.

Just autotraced a part from the movie. It would be great if the conveying message wasn't about consumerism, though the "weapon of choice" isn't so clean.

Hm, my first association with 'They Live' would be brainwashing, but i guess consumerism is the same thing (Hello Edward Bernays).

The thing i find funny is how these hipster logos use and glamorise fifities aestethics, which is, in my opinion, not exactly the hippest era of the last century.

I think it's odd this is an internet trend (hipster, hipster logo, etc.)  Not that I really get around much anymore, but I haven't seen any trend like this on, e.g. television advertising.  At least not b&w.  Of course there a minimalistic ads, but not b&w or similar.

Edit
I'm just recovering from a pretty grueling medical procedure, but hope to fire up Inkscape today.

Yaaaay, you're back !!!   :2tu:

I think this trend has a lot to do with the programs they are made with. They are easy to make, yet you can ramp up the complexity.
And if you have a look at the tutorials this "Manny" (https://www.youtube.com/user/Tronix101design/videos) guy does, all his videos are between 15-25min long, and he does really the simplest stuff for PS beginners.
So theres a certain appeal.

I like it. Its very fifties.

Have you ever seen the documentary about Helvetica ?
It shows why this typeface was such a revolution especially in contrast what was the usual style before Helvetica.

It also applies to minimalism. And i think Lazur nailed it.

Love this !

My only criticism would be: i know its a mountain but it could also be a pyramid and the road is a space elevator ;)

You are really good at minimalism, Lazur !

Professional logos can be/are even simpler.
With other possible representations.
