Title: Placing images into Word loses resolution
Post by: Dissonance on May 18, 2017, 12:36:40 PM
Hello!

I made several images in Inkscape that I'm placing into a Word file. In the past, I used EPS files, but the new version of Word (2016) cannot display them. When I save my Inkscape files as WMF files, it introduces errors into the pictures. When I save the my files as EMF or export to PNG, it loses too much resolution. Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks,
D

We've heard a lot of reports about difficulty using SVG images in Word.  Would you be able to use a different editor?  Libre Office/Libre Writer seems to handle a little better.  Or there's Scribus, which is open source desktop publishing, which is a little different from word processing, but it supports SVG....I think natively.

But I know,  I hate when someone answers a question I never asked.  But just for your info.

I have no idea why saving as WMF doesn't work.  If you could share either the image with the problem, or some other image which shows the same problem, we can investigate.  It's possible there's a bug.  Or maybe there are certain options when you save, that can be changed, that would give a better result.  But we would need the SVG image that's ready to save as WMF, so we can test.

If we can't make the WMF work, there should be a way to export a PNG at the proper size and resolution, so it doesn't get distorted.  But let's start with the SVG file, and we'll go from there  :)

You can change the resolution of the exported PNG to a higher value. Unfortunately, there are a couple of known issues with emf/wmf export from Inkscape. Or you could perhaps use an office suite that is able to work with vector files... e.g. LibreOffice.

Thank you for letting me know about Libra Office. I was able to put the SVG directly into the Word file with it.

When I exported my SVG file to a WMF file with Libra Office, it also introduced errors. I wonder if the problem is with my file and not Inkscape.

It might be that Inkscape and LO use the same library for exporting to wmf (they share some libraries - not sure if they share this one, though).

Well I was thinking to use Libre Office/Libre Writer instead of Word, so that you can use the SVG image (not converted to WMF).  I never dreamed you could use it to convert the image to WMF!

Even though there may be some bugs with converting SVG to WMF in Inkscape, we still aren't sure if that's the problem you're seeing, because you haven't shared either the file, or an example file for us to examine.  So it's possible we could fix the problem for WMF.  Maybe not a huge possibility, but possible.

Or as I intended to say before, use LibreOffice/Writer (instead of Word) and use the original SVG.

Or we could still tell you how to get a good (or at least better) resolution or image quality with an exported PNG.
